Will Eisner, Comic Artist and Educator
March 6th is the birth anniversary of comic artist and educator Will Eisner (1917-2005). Eisner’s long career, a celebration of sequential art, was filled with accomplishments including creation of the long running Spirit comic book series and a line of educational comic books. He is credited with the creation of the first graphic novel, A Contract with God. His instructional and educational works, Comics and Sequential Art (741.5 EIS) and Graphic Storytelling, are considered the bibles of the trade. He enriched a field that many considered junk culture with a sense of style, clean draftsmanship, and a complexity of storytelling on par with many legitimate short story writers or screenwriters.
In his honor, the comic book industry created the Eisner Awards to annually recognize outstanding creators and their works.
To see more of Mr. Eisner’s work and that of his fellow Masters of American Comics visit the Hinsdale Public Library display Four-Color Art Form (on display until March 13, 2006).
