<title>LIBRARY HAPPENINGS MAY 31-JUNE 6</title>
<description><![CDATA[<p>REMINDER:  T<u>he Library will be closed on Monday, May 31</u>.  It will re-open at its usual time on Tuesday, June 1.</p>

<p><u>ADULT SERVICES</u>:<br />
On Tuesday, June 1, at 10:30 a.m., <strong>The Morning Book Group</strong> will be discussing <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Little-Heathens-Spirits-During-Depression/dp/0553384244/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1275270187&sr=1-1">Little Heathens: Hard Times and High Spirits on an Iowa Farm During the Great Depression</a> by Mildred Armstrong Kalish--a loving memoir of growing up in a Midwest rural community during the 1930's. <p><u>YOUTH SERVICES</u>:<br />
On Tuesday, June 1, at 4 p.m., the film <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1014759/">Alice in Wonderland</a>, starring Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, and Helena Bonham-Carter, and directed by Tim Burton, will be shown at 4 p.m. in Kids Korner.  No tickets are needed, but space is limited.  The rating is PG.</p>

<p><strong>Information/Sign-up Meetings</strong> for the S<em>ummer Reading Volunteers</em> will be this week on Wednesday, June 2, at 7 p.m., and Thursday, June 3, at 4 p.m.  Open to children who will be in grades 6 and up.  Come with a parent (written permission is needed) and a copy of your summer schedule through the end of July.  Slots fill up fast, so try to attend one of these meetings.</p>

<p>At 7 p.m. on Monday, Officer Carl Sabo will present a program for every parent of a child who uses the Internet:  <strong>Internet Safety & Social Networking </strong>.  He will cover "Internet sexual predators and how they operate, keeping your identity safe and the pros and cons of social networking sites, posting pictures and videos online, cell phone and cyberbullying". <p>On Thursday, March 8, at 7 p.m., <em>Wardrobe Consultant</em> Jan Alberts will present a program on <strong>Updating your Wardrobe</strong> for Spring.  According to Ms. Alberts, everyone needs 5 basic pieces as the foundation of their wardrobe.  Find out what they are, how to build a stylish collection, how to shop for them, and how to care for them. Monday through Friday each week until April 16 a representative from the <strong>Census Bureau</strong> will be available in the Lobby from 2-5 p.m.  She will be able to answer questions about this year's <a href="http://2010.census.gov/2010census/">Census</a> in Spanish as well as in English.</p>

<p>On Tuesday, March 30, Daxa Sanghvi will present the program <strong>National American Red Cross Month - Home Safety</strong> at 7 p.m. in the Large Meeting Room. <title>EARTH HOUR 2010</title>
<description><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.myearthhour.org/">Earth Hour 2010</a> will be from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. (local time) on Saturday, March 27.  To participate, just turn off your lights for that one hour.  A number of  <a href="http://www.myearthhour.org/news/article/03/18/2010/illinois-prepares-3rd-annual-earth-hour">Illinois communities</a> are participating.   Many Chicago landmarks will extinguish their outside lights for that time as well.  This worldwide event is sponsored by <a href="http://www.worldwildlife.org/">the World Wildlife Fund</a> as a way to focus attention on the effects of climate change as caused by pollution.</p>]]></description>

<p><u>YOUTH SERVICES</u>:<br />
Spring Break for local schools is this week, so the regular Story Times and programs are suspended until next week.  Instead, several special programs have been scheduled.</p>

<p>On Monday, March 22, the movie version of Maurice Sendak's <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0386117/">Where the Wild Things Are</a> will be shown in Kids Korner at 10 a.m.</p>

<p>On Tuesday, March 23, there will be two performances of <strong>The Brothers Grimm</strong> presented by <a href="http://www.ouroborostheatre.com/">The Ouroboros Theatre</a>--one at 11 a.m. and one at 1 p.m.--in the Large Meeting Room.  Intended for children in grades K-5, no tickets are required, but seating is limited.</p>

<p>At 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 24, the Disney film <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0780521/">The Princess and the Frog</a> will be shown in Kids Korner.</p>

<p>On Thursday, March 25, noted musician <a href="http://www.jimgill.com/new/home.html">Jim Gill</a>, will perform at 11 a.m. in the Large Meeting Room.  No tickets are needed, but space is limited.  All ages are welcome.<br />

<p><u>ADULT SERVICES</u>: <br />
The <strong>Adult Winter Reading Program</strong> ended Saturday.  As part of the <strong>Finale</strong>, there will be a special program on Tuesday, March 16, at 7 p.m.  <strong>Mysteries: Why We Love to Read (and Write) Them </strong> will be presented by local mystery writer <a href="http://www.davidjwalker.com/">David J. Walker</a>. <strong>Teen Tech Week</strong> ended Saturday.  The Raffle for the <em>IPod Nano</em> will be held on Monday, March 15, at 4 p.m.  There will be 2 winners.  Thanks to all who participated in the programs.</p>

<p>The <strong>Battle of the Books Semi-finals and Finals</strong> will be held on Monday, March 15, starting at 6:00 p.m. with the <strong>Blazin' Pages RR Inc</strong>. vs the <strong>Addicted Readers</strong>.  At 6:30 p.m., the <strong>Final Chapter of the Bookworms</strong> will meet <strong>Book-a-licious</strong>.  The winners of those battles will meet for the final time at 7 p.m.  All of this year's participants and their parents are invited to see this final battle and stay for refreshments.</p>

<p>The<strong> Wolves Winter Reading Program</strong> ends on Friday, March 19.  The final raffles will be held on Saturday, March 20 at 11 a.m.  Patrons can still sign up, but all reading and reporting must be finished before the raffle starts.</p>]]></description>
