LIBRARY HAPPENINGS MAY 31-JUNE 6

ADULT SERVICES:
On Tuesday, June 1, at 10:30 a.m., The Morning Book Group will be discussing Little Heathens: Hard Times and High Spirits on an Iowa Farm During the Great Depression by Mildred Armstrong Kalish--a loving memoir of growing up in a Midwest rural community during the 1930's. YOUTH SERVICES:
On Tuesday, June 1, at 4 p.m., the film Alice in Wonderland, starring Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, and Helena Bonham-Carter, and directed by Tim Burton, will be shown at 4 p.m. in Kids Korner. No tickets are needed, but space is limited. The rating is PG.

Information/Sign-up Meetings for the Summer Reading Volunteers will be this week on Wednesday, June 2, at 7 p.m., and Thursday, June 3, at 4 p.m. Open to children who will be in grades 6 and up. Come with a parent (written permission is needed) and a copy of your summer schedule through the end of July. Slots fill up fast, so try to attend one of these meetings.

Online registration for Summer craft programs will begin on Saturday, June 5, beginning at 9 a.m. Check the calendar for underlined entries; those are the ones requiring pre-registration.

On Monday, May 24, join authors Susan Miura and Margot Justes in celebrating National Artisan Gelato Month with A Taste of Italy, a food tour of Italy's regions and main islands. Register online.

ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, May 17, at 7 p.m., documentary filmmaker Frank Klicar will present the program In Search of the Holy Grail . Find out how the legend began and trace the Grail's "journey" from the Holy Land to the British Isles and Europe, and back to the Middle East. Register online.

On Tuesday, May 18, at 7:30 p.m., the Evening Book Group will meet in Kids Korner to discuss The Last Dickens by Matthew Pearl--a search into the background of Dickens' unfinished novel, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, leads to perilous adventures on 3 continents. ADULT SERVICES:
The monthly workshop Effective Resumes, Interviewing & Job Search Techniques --sponsored by the state IDES--will be this Monday, May 10, starting at 9:30 a.m. Besides tips on job hunting, opportunities for practice interviewing will be available. Register online.

On Monday evening, May 10, at 7 p.m., Reference Librarian Chris Mika will demonstrate both online and print sources for finding a new or used car in a Car Buying Workshop. Register online.

On Thursday, May 13, at 7 p.m., join Steven Frenzel, from Marquee Movie Presentations, for an evening of Baseball in the Movies. Clips from classic baseball films, along with humorous anecdotes, will be presented. Register online.

It's the second Friday of the month on May 14 and time once again for Got Game?. Come with friends or come solo and play Wii, Playstation, and PC games after-hours, from 7-10 p.m. Open to anyone ages 12 and up--children under 17 need written parental permission. Register online. To celebrate Children's Book Week, crowd pleaser Chris Fascione will perform on Wednesday, May 12, at 7 p.m. in Kids Korner. All ages are welcome to see this enjoyable storyteller, mime, and juggler. No tickets are needed, but space is limited.

Celebrate National Salad Month by planting your own edible garden, even if you have no yard. "Discerning Cook" Audrey Beauvais tells you how on Monday, May 3, at 7 p.m. in her program Harvest the Benefits of a Mini-Garden. All you need is a balcony or just a sunny windowsill . Register online.

On Monday, April 26, at 6:30 p.m., the Friends of the Library will hold their annual meeting. At 7 p.m., members only will be entertained by the Those Were the Days Radio Players who will perform from authentic radio scripts for such shows as Fibber McGee and Molly and The Shadow. ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, April 19, at 7 p.m., Kenneth Grayer, CEO of Financial Management Institute, Inc.. will present a hands-on workshop on Basic Money Management. Learn how to assess current financial status, set long and short term goals, create a workable budget, and evaluate credit options. Register online.

A bus trip is planned for Sunday, April 25, to see the musical Million Dollar Quartet at the Apollo Theater in the Lincoln Park area.

On December 4, 1956, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis played together for the first and only time. Enjoy this musical featuring rock �n roll hits including Blue Suede Shoes, Whole Lotta Shakin� Goin� On, Fever, Hound Dog, Great Balls of Fire and more!

ADULT SERVICES:
The monthly seminar sponsored by the Illinois IDES Department, Effective Resumes, Interviewing & Job Search Techniques, will be held on Monday, April 12, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Writing an effective resume, job searching efficiently, and interviewing impressively will all be covered. There will even be opportunities to participate in mock interviews. Register online.

National Library Week begins today. Several special events are planned as part of the celebration.

On Monday, April 12, the Friends of the Library will be having a Mini Book Sale in the Lobby from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

At 7 p.m. on Monday, Officer Carl Sabo will present a program for every parent of a child who uses the Internet: Internet Safety & Social Networking . He will cover "Internet sexual predators and how they operate, keeping your identity safe and the pros and cons of social networking sites, posting pictures and videos online, cell phone and cyberbullying". On Tuesday, April 13, at 7 p.m., historian/bibliophile Bill Haase will present 25 Books That Have Most Influenced Civilization. Register online.

On Thursday, April 14, at 7 p.m., the film The Time Traveler's Wife will be shown in the Large Meeting Room--a couple fall in love and marry in spite of his repeated absences as he involuntarily travels in time. Rated PG-13. No tickets are necessary.

April is National Poetry Month. To celebrate this, former summer intern Josie will be returning on Thursday, April 15, at 7:15 p.m., for an evening of poetry sharing and music (she's bringing her guitar), snacks, and prizes. For students in grades 6-12. Register online.

ADULT SERVICES:
Bill Helmuth returns on Monday, April 5, at 7 p.m., with pictures and stories from his recent trip to the Holy Land, Modern Israel & Christian Traditions. He will take attendees with him to vicariously see shrines, churches, and other revered sites in the area and connect them with Biblical history. Register online.

On Thursday, March 8, at 7 p.m., Wardrobe Consultant Jan Alberts will present a program on Updating your Wardrobe for Spring. A capella group AC-Rock will be performing rock and roll hits in the Large Meeting Room on Sunday, April 11, at 2 p.m., as part of National Library Week. Tickets are needed for this event and can be obtained at the Circulation Desk.

ADULT SERVICES:
Monday through Friday each week until April 16 a representative from the Census Bureau will be available in the Lobby from 2-5 p.m. She will be able to answer questions about this year's Census in Spanish as well as in English.

On Tuesday, March 30, Daxa Sanghvi will present the program National American Red Cross Month - Home Safety at 7 p.m. in the Large Meeting Room. Learn how to prepare for emergencies in your home, how to check for safety hazards, and how to adapt a home for handicapped access. Register online.

YOUTH SERVICES:
The Spring Bunny returns this week for the annual Spring Fling - Bunny Hop and Hat Parade for young children through Kindergarten. There will be stories, puppet shows, and special treats as well as a chance to show off hats in the Parade through the Library. No registration is necessary. The times are:

Turn it off, take action for Earth Hour

EARTH HOUR 2010

Earth Hour 2010 will be from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. (local time) on Saturday, March 27. To participate, just turn off your lights for that one hour. A number of Illinois communities are participating. Many Chicago landmarks will extinguish their outside lights for that time as well. This worldwide event is sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund as a way to focus attention on the effects of climate change as caused by pollution.

ADULT SERVICES:
At 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday, March 24, a computer class on Internet Basics will be presented. Intended for patrons with no internet experience, it will cover URLs, toolbars, and more. There is currently a Waiting List for this class; to be added to it, register online or call extension 233.

YOUTH SERVICES:
Spring Break for local schools is this week, so the regular Story Times and programs are suspended until next week. Instead, several special programs have been scheduled.

On Monday, March 22, the movie version of Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are will be shown in Kids Korner at 10 a.m.

On Tuesday, March 23, there will be two performances of The Brothers Grimm presented by The Ouroboros Theatre--one at 11 a.m. and one at 1 p.m.--in the Large Meeting Room. Intended for children in grades K-5, no tickets are required, but seating is limited.

At 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 24, the Disney film The Princess and the Frog will be shown in Kids Korner.

On Thursday, March 25, noted musician Jim Gill, will perform at 11 a.m. in the Large Meeting Room. No tickets are needed, but space is limited. All ages are welcome.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS MARCH 15-21

Hope everyone remembered to change their clocks forward one hour. Today starts Daylight Savings Time.

ADULT SERVICES:
The Adult Winter Reading Program ended Saturday. As part of the Finale, there will be a special program on Tuesday, March 16, at 7 p.m. Mysteries: Why We Love to Read (and Write) Them will be presented by local mystery writer David J. Walker. This program is open to anyone ; register online. The raffle winners will be drawn during this program.

Also on Tuesday, March 16, at 7:30 p.m., the Evening Book Group will meet in Kids Corner to discuss Firefly Lane by Kristen Hannah--a friendship between two young women persists over the years in spite of their very different career paths. For more information, call Extension 272.

On Thursday, March 18, Scott Sanders will present a program on Flickr at 7 p.m. Learn how to upload, manage, and share photos and videos with this popular program site. Register online.

YOUTH SERVICES:
Teen Tech Week ended Saturday. The Raffle for the IPod Nano will be held on Monday, March 15, at 4 p.m. There will be 2 winners. Thanks to all who participated in the programs.

The Battle of the Books Semi-finals and Finals will be held on Monday, March 15, starting at 6:00 p.m. with the Blazin' Pages RR Inc. vs the Addicted Readers. At 6:30 p.m., the Final Chapter of the Bookworms will meet Book-a-licious. The winners of those battles will meet for the final time at 7 p.m. All of this year's participants and their parents are invited to see this final battle and stay for refreshments.

The Wolves Winter Reading Program ends on Friday, March 19. The final raffles will be held on Saturday, March 20 at 11 a.m. Patrons can still sign up, but all reading and reporting must be finished before the raffle starts.
