EARTH HOUR 2010
Earth Hour 2010 will be from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. (local time) on Saturday, March 27. To participate, just turn off your lights for that one hour. A number of Illinois communities are participating. Many Chicago landmarks will extinguish their outside lights for that time as well. This worldwide event is sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund as a way to focus attention on the effects of climate change as caused by pollution.

ICE SCULPTURE
The ice sculpture made Saturday by master carver Dan Rebholz has been on display near the fountain at the front entrance. As is typical of ice sculptures, its existence is fleeting and will soon be gone, especially if it gets as warm this weekend as predicted. I was able to see it on Tuesday--a seal sitting on a pile of books, balancing two more books, corner-to-corner on its nose--but by the time I brought my camera on Wednesday, the books on its nose were fallen to the ground. Here are the pictures I was able to take:

BUTTERFLIES IN YOUTH SERVICES
Come see the butterflies in Youth Services. Our local "Butterfly Lady", Terri Kiefer, has once again provided the Library with the opportunity to watch butterflies change from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. There is a big screened box on the YS Reference Desk. As of yesterday, there were 3 emerged butterflies, two chrysalises, and one caterpillar--another caterpillar had become a chrysalis while no one was looking, within a half hour. There are more in the display cabinet.
Here's the box--one chrysalis is at the top on the left and one monarch is at the top on the right, and just barely visible near the bottom, in the center, on a leaf, is the remaining caterpillar:

The other two monarchs were on the bottom, one drinking the provided sugar water:

This display will be available for, probably, two weeks.

SUMMER 2008 TIE-DYE T-SHIRTS PICTURES
There were many wonderful shirts, camisoles, pillowcases, etc. created at the 4 classes led by Mrs. M yesterday--and we had great weather! I took pictures of many of them, but some children left before I finished. Those I was successful in capturing on film can be seen now as a slide show on Flickr. Enjoy the talents of our creative Elk Grove children!

LABELS AND ATHLETIC SHOES
There are two new "repositories" now available in the skylight area of the new lobby.

One is a more up-to-date receptacle for Campbells product labels that the Friends use to get books and equipment for the Library:

There is also a temporary bin for the Nike Reuse-a-Shoe Recycling event.

Until May 4, patrons can drop in the bin any brand of athletic shoes. They will be ground up and used for making sports activities surfaces. However, the shoes cannot have any metal or cleats, they cannot be wet or damp, and they cannot be dress shoes.

YA CRAFT NIGHT
Last night there was a craft night for students in grades 6 to 12. The project was a Photo Cube made from discarded CD cases. The prototype was made by Mrs. M:

Eleven girls attended and had a lot of fun choosing background papers and embellishments for photos and copied pictures from the huge array of scrapbooking materials provided. Because it takes so long for the glue to dry, the girls worked on the individual sides separately and then glued it all together just before they left. I took pictures just before they made the cubes so all sides could be seen at once. Some girls were going to finish at home.

They are all so creative! Great job, girls! and thanks to Mrs. Hoffman, Mrs. Casper, Mrs. M., and Mrs. Chromyk!

"WHAT'S NEW IN ADULT SERVICES"
Every month recently, a little 4-page pamphlet, called What's New in Adult Services, has been put out by the Adult Services Department. Written and designed by Nancy Broten-Munson, it usually highlights special events, acquisitions, collections, or interesting things connected to Adult Services. It can be found just outside the entrance to the Adult Services Department, on a display just to the left as you go through the door.
This month, there is a section with an annotated list of websites containing practical information on going Back to School for parents and students alike. Next, there is a section highlighting the Adult Basic Reading Collection with a list of recent acquisitions, including new titles in several series like Black Cat Reading & Training and Macmillan Guided Readers. The last section has a reminder about the ongoing CD Collection shifting and an explanation of the way the CDs are classified using the ANSCR scheme.
Look for a new pamphlet each month for Adult Services news and information in brief.

LIVE BUTTERFLY EXHIBIT
Come to Youth Services today and see the Live Butterfly Exhibit. There are cocoons and caterpillars in special containers preparing for either emerging as a butterfly or spinning a cocoon. One butterfly was already coming out of its cocoon today. The exhibit will be at the library for about 2 weeks.

KENT STATE MAY 4, 1970
Thirty-five years ago today, four students were killed in Ohio when National Guardsmen inexplicably fired on a rowdy anti-war protest group at Kent State. Another memorial site is Kent State/May 4, 1970. Five years ago Noam Chomsky gave a memorial speech at Kent State. The tragedy also forced a change in how National Guard and police units face up to riots and major public disturbances.
Most of us today don't really remember or think about what happened then unless we hear Neil Young's memorable song, "Four Dead in Ohio". The lyrics are brief and repetitive, but heartbreaking.
