SUMMER READING OPENING DAY 2008
The Summer Reading Programs for both Adult and Youth Services started yesterday. Nearly 1000 patrons signed up altogether.
In Youth Services, children started by following the Ant Trail

to the Reference Desk to pick up their Recording Sheets (prizes are awarded for completing a specific number of minutes of reading). Behind the desk, the Bulletin Board displays the various prizes to be awarded.

The t-shirts have not yet arrived in chilren's sizes yet, but some adult sizes came in for the employees to wear Opening Day; this is what the back looks like:

An additional option for the children is to read a specific type of book each week chosen by the Dewey Wheel

Special raffle-type tickets will then be entered in weekly drawings.
When the children officially had their names entered in the computer, they received a ticket that they were able to redeem, as they left the library, for special treats--juicy gummy bugs and little bug cookies (graciously donated by the Keebler company).

In Adult Services, the theme is Bingo. The sign-up sheet is a specialized Bingo card.

A ball is chosen from the spin-able cage

with a category marked on it that corresponds to a space on the card. The patron daubs the space

and when the chosen book is read and recorded, gets a chip which can be put into one of the prize buckets.

To earn a t-shirt, 5 books must be read; a true bingo is not necessary.

OPEN HOUSE FOR CONSTRUCTION CONCLUSION
On Sunday, April 13, the Library hosted an Open House to showcase the recent renovations. The new Browsing Bookshelves even had books on them from both Adult and Youth Services:

who was situated in the entrance lobby across from Circulation and just outside the Trees Exhibit:

There were refreshments; cookies provided by the Friends)

beverages--tea as well as coffee from the new Cafe' area, and water , too

and fresh popcorn

There were Freebies--CD opener/cleaner/pens, sturdy bags, and folding pocket pens:

Adult Services had a slide-show presentation about the department resources:

Library Monitor Jeanne demonstrates the reclinability of one of the new chairs that will be located in the new Wii room [not open yet]:

Games were also available for patrons to play--actually, these games are available anytime for patrons to use in the library; ask at the Reference Desk:

And in Youth Services, Showtime Tony, Balloonist, provided various creations to long lines of children right up to closing:

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE AS OF FRIDAY MARCH 21
Actually, not much is going on. Furniture has been moved about in the Lobby area, but they're still waiting for some shelf tops to arrive for the new Browsing Area. There are some new plants next to the sliding doors at the Main Entry.

In Youth Services, many of the old wooden tables and chairs have been sold in anticipation of the arrival of new furniture. The chairs arrived

but only one table came

--the rest should arrive in a week or so:
The chairs and tables for little children did all arrive:

CONSTRUCTION AS OF FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26
It actually doesn't look like much is happening from the public side; it's all in the electrical and structural changes "behind the plastic curtain". Here are a few pictures taken on Friday, mostly after the workers had left.
The plastic hadn't been put down yet, so I got a picture looking from the rotunda side towards the new workroom framing:

Here's a look into the workroom from the lobby side:

Looking towards the old bathrooms:

Piles of thin boards (?) ready to be installed:

Looking into the workroom from the area of the old doorway, insulation is seen ready to be installed (I assume):

Looks like new light fixtures are being installed:

Later, the area had been closed off again by the plastic curtain and yellow tape; the new "footprint" for the area can be seen in the floor:

The area under the skylight has had some equipment moved into it:

Because of the unavailability of the Large Meeting Room, the annual Art Show has had to set up in the small area between the Computer Lab and the Quiet Study/Periodical Room:

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE AS OF FRIDAY OCTOBER 19
Well, the check-out desk is no more. There is nothing left under the skylight.
When I got to work at 11 a.m., this is how the check-out area looked; they were removing the counter tops:

To get to Adult Services or to Youth Services patrons were funneled around that area:

To check-out items, patrons have to go to the doors leading to the Large Meeting Room:

Not too long after, the counter tops were all gone:

And soon after that--mid-afternoon--the whole section was empty:

Only the rug where the counters were and the last bit of electrical connection remains:

The "new" entry to Youth Services is blocked again:

It reminds me of a play area at a mall--but without toys.

On Thursday, the circ room was locked up and everyone was funneled around the back of the foyer and through a door next to the old ones that automatically opened.

NEW CHECKOUT PROCEDURE
Yesterday (Thursday), patrons got a first taste of the new checkout/security system. From now on, instead of a date-due sticker in (or on) a checked-out item, the patron will be given a printed paper "receipt" that lists the items and their due dates. New items (and, eventually, all library items) already have a new security system affixed, an RFID system--similar to the I-Pass. New security gates were being installed yesterday, as well. The new system will enable speedier check-outs and Self-Check-Out will be available in the near future, too. DVDs and music CDs will also have new security cases.

BOOK COVERS IN THE CATALOG
If you've looked up a book lately on the public catalog, you might have noticed that some titles may now show a picture of the book's cover on the main entry page--just like on Amazon. Although not every book is included, most of those added in the last few years--children's and adults'--include this feature in their catalog entry. And, if you click on the picture, you can view it in a larger size.

"MY MEDIA MALL" UPDATE/AUTOMATED COMPUTER SIGN-UP
In the September 6 posting [see below], I discussed the new 24/7 on-line audio/e-book download service the Elk Grove Village Public Library has recently joined. There is now a direct link to My Media Mall through the EGVPL web site from the Electronic Research page.
The computer labs are now using an automated system for patron sign-ups. Just enter the complete 14-digit barcode number from the library card and get 60 minutes of usage time. This time is extendable if no one is waiting. If the lab is full, a patron can reserve a computer--the next available--at a special computer station. Registered reciprocal borrowers just use the barcodes from their own cards. It was installed on Monday and, so far, seems to be running smoothly.

DOWNLOAD E-BOOKS & AUDIO BOOKS
The Elk Grove Village Library recently joined a consortium to provide our patrons with downloadable e-books and audio books. Available 24/7 from home computers with Internet access, the items can be downloaded to portable devices (like MP3 players), burned to a CD, or just read or heard on the computer itself. A variety of titles are available for all ages.
Just go to My Media Mall. Open an account by choosing the Elk Grove Library and entering the entire 14 digit bar code number from your library card. Next, you will have to download a software program to your computer. Choose your titles and download them. The "checkout" period is 3 weeks; when the item is "due" it will "disappear" or become unavailable.

"LIVE HOMEWORK HELP" UPDATE
The connection to the new "Live Homework Help" is now also available directly from the Kids Korner: If You Are a...Kid section of the Library home page as well as from the "Homework Center" page.
This is a LIVE interaction with a subject specialist for students from grades 4-12 and beginning college. [Times shown on site are Eastern, so instead of 2-10 p.m., here it is 1-9 p.m. every day.]

LIVE HOMEWORK HELP
The Library has just added a new Electronic Resource, Tutor.Com's Live Homework Help. Although we still have My Web Librarian--where patrons can ask a qualified librarian for real-time help--, this new service is specifically for students from 4th grade through college. Real-time interaction with subject-specific experts will now be available online through our Web Site's Electronic Research Page, from 1 p.m. to Midnight 9 p.m. (the site says "2 to 10 p.m", but that is Eastern time; also, the time may be extended to midnight once more schools begin in the Fall), 7 days a week. Subjects include Math, Science, Social Studies, and English--more subjects are available at the higher grades. Temporarily, at the moment, the resource is may be only accessible from the computers IN the Library.

NEW LIGHTS
Notice how bright it suddenly is in the library lately? It's the new lights, being put up this week. They are actually the same type as the old ones, but over time, the lights begin to lose their brilliance and need to be replaced. The new lights seem to be yellower, too, but that will also change over time. Replacement is usually every two years.

YOUTH SERVICES OPEN AGAIN
The Youth Department re-opened its doors to patrons late this afternoon as soon as the finally-finished carpeting was vacuumed. The predominantly blue-purple-pink-etc. carpeting looks great--mostly thin stripes with occasional blocks of circles and stars. The computer room had not yet been re-set up by 5:30; it will be ready by Saturday morning.

YOUTH DEPARTMENT CARPETING PROGRESS
The Youth Services Department is having its carpeting replaced this week. The replacement began on Monday; it looks like they are about half way finished, so far. From the West wall, they have done the YA bump out and were almost to the offices on the East side of the room and back (South) toward the windows up to the Reference Desk area. The Play area by the window is not done yet, but the old carpeting is gone. (This was as of c.11:00 a.m.) The new carpeting is multicolored with a dark blue background; some squares have geometric shapes (didn't see them close up). Really, really nice.
Although the actual Youth Services room is closed, some books and materials are still available just outside the door and one of the librarians is seated there to assist patrons. Videos and DVD's are on carts in Adult Services. The department could be open Friday or Saturday at the latest.
