LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JUNE 1-7

ADULT SERVICES:
The Morning Book Group will be meeting on Tuesday, June 2, at 10:30 a.m. to discuss Carolyn Jourdan's Heart in the Right Place, a memoir of a daughter leaving a high-powered life in DC to help out at her parents' rural Tennessee medical office after her mother has a heart attack. YOUTH SERVICES:
The Summer Reading Program will start in a week. Online registration for the programs will begin this coming Saturday, June 6, at 9 a.m.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS MAY 25-31

REMINDER: The Library will be closed on both Sunday, May 24, and Monday, May 25, for the Memorial Day holiday.

YOUTH SERVICES:
It's almost time for Summer Reading to begin (June 15) and volunteers are needed to help run the games. Interested students in grades 6-12 are invited to attend an Informational/Sign-Up Meeting on either Tuesday, May 26, at 7 p.m., or Wednesday, May 27, at 4 p.m. Please bring a parent--a permission slip must be signed--and your summer schedule--vacations, school, sports, etc. This meeting may run more than an hour as there will be an opportunity to sign up for hours right there. Hours should count towards Community Service requirements. Also, "first come, first served" for best hours. For more information, call extension 267.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS MAY 18-24

ADULT SERVICES:
Kathleen Obirek, Master Gardener and Certified Landscape Designer, will return Monday, May 18, at 7 p.m., to present the program Design the Front of Your Home for Curb Appeal. Even if you are not planning to sell your home, you can learn how to transform an ordinary front yard into a "picturesque" one, especially if the yard is a "Landscaper's Challenge". Register online.

On Tuesday, May 19, the Evening Book Group will be meeting at 7:30 p.m. in Kids Corner to discuss Loving Frank by Nancy Horan--a fictionalized account of the scandalous affair between Frank Lloyd Wright and Mamah Borthwick Cheney. For more information, call extension 272.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS MAY 10-17

ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, May 10, the final session of Effective Resumes, Interviewing, and Job Search Techniques will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This is sponsored by Illinois' IDES department. Register online.

It's time for another Got Game! in Adult Services. This Open Gaming Night will be on Friday, May 15, from 7 to 10 p.m. Everyone is welcome, but children under 17 must have a signed permission slip (available at the Adult Reference Desk) in order to attend. For more information, call extension 272.

YOUTH SERVICES:
May 11-17 is Children's Book Week. As part of the celebration, Youth Services has several events planned. On both Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 10 a.m., short picture-book-related Pre-School Films will be shown in Kids Corner. Pillow and blankets may be brought along. No tickets or registration are needed, but children under 4 must be accompanied by an adult.

On Thursday, May 14, Alex Brooks from the Des Plaines Canine Training Center, will present the program Training to Be Top Dog: Guiding Your Pet to Good Behaviour at 7 p.m. Mr. Brooks has trained animals for K-9 units, television, and film productions. Learn how to modify your pet's actions and learn how to talk to them effectively. As he will be bringing his own dogs as models, no other dogs are permitted to attend. This program is for grades 6 through adult. Register online.

MORE ADULT SERVICES FURNITURE ARRIVES

[This entry was meant for last week, but I had some technical difficulties.]
Yesterday, May 5, the Computer Lab was back in full use and the Quiet Study, Group Study, and Periodicals access were again available (though Periodicals has a temporary make-shift desk for now). The Adult Reference Desk is still in the Browsing Area along with the New Books Collection.
Last week, a lot of the new furniture was in place.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS MAY 4-10

Alexian Connects will present the program Stroke: Are You at Risk? on Monday, May 4, at 7 p.m. Learn about detection, treatment, and prevention of strokes, which affect nearly a million people every year. Register by calling 1-866-ALEXIAN (253-9426).

On Tuesday, May 5, the Morning Book Group will meet at 10:30 a.m. to discuss Sherman Alexie's book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian--a teenaged boy transfers from a Spokane area reservation school to a school populated primarily by rich white children and learns about community and friendship.
