VOTE FOR FAVORITE BOOKS
Children's Book Week this year will run from May 11 to 17. Children and teens can participate by casting a vote for their favorite recent books. However, all votes for the Children's Choice Book Awards must be cast by May 3. Awards are given in six categories:
* Kindergarten to Second Grade Book of the Year
* Third to Fourth Grade Book of the Year
* Fifth to Sixth Grade Book of the Year
* Teen Choice Book of the Year
* Author of the Year
* Illustrator of the Year
Children in grades k-6 can vote online here. Teens can vote online
here. The winners will be announced on May 12.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS APRIL 27-MAY 3
ADULT SERVICES:
Spend April in Paris--or at least one evening in April--on Monday, April 27, at 7 p.m. Photographer Jerry Donohue will present his slides showing Paris, the "City of Light", while talking about his adventures there. Register online.
One Computer Class is scheduled for this week, Internet Basics, on Monday, April 27, at 9:15 a.m Friday, May 1, at 2 p.m. Learn about toolbars, urls, and more. Register online. There is currently a Waiting List.
On Sunday, May 3, at 2 p.m., stop by the Library for Confessions of a Blogger Mom. Elk Grove Village resident Dawn Meehan will talk about her new book, Because I Said So, based on the humorous reporting of her family's activities--six kids--on her popular blog. Register online.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS APRIL 20-26
REMINDER: The Parking Lot Resurfacing is scheduled to begin this week with the South Lot. Parking will be available at the Pavilion.
On Monday, April 20, at 7 p.m., former WBBM-TV crime reporter, John "Bulldog" Drummond, will be discussing some of his many experiences over 40 years of his career. Many of these are included in his two books, Thirty Years in the Trenches (1998) (070.92 DRU) and It Ain't Pretty, But It's Real (2008) (070.92 DRU). This program is only open to members of the Friends of the Library. Anyone is eligible to join for a small yearly fee. Contact the Information Desk at the Library for more information. The actual registration for the program is online. The Annual Meeting of the Friends will be at 6:30, before the program.

CONSTRUCTION NEARING COMPLETION
Last week, there was still some carpeting and clean-up to be done. The computer lab was finished:

Patrons were back in the South end again--using temporary folding tables, the usual rectangular ones and a few semi-circular:

By Tuesday, the Quiet Study was all carpeted:

New booth seats and tables were set up near there:

There are electrical outlets in the floor for four connections by each:

Wednesday, the computers were being re-installed in the Computer Lab:

There was a new floor in Periodicals (even under the moving shelves):

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS APRIL 13-19
ADULT SERVICES:
From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, April 13, the second of three sessions of Effective Resumes, Interviewing, and Job Search Techniques will be presented by Illinois WorkNET/IDES. Register online.
On Tuesday, April 14, there will be a Bus Trip: The Merc, Money, and Manny's leaving at 8:30 a.m., and returning at 3 p.m. Participants will get a tour of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and Board of Trade, the Federal Reserve Bank, and have lunch at Manny's Deli. Tickets are $57. Contact Jill for more information.
YOUTH SERVICES:
This week is National Library Week. As part of this annual event, Youth Services is sponsoring several programs. At 10 a.m. on both Tuesday and Thursday--April 14 and 16-- short films will be shown based on popular children's books. This is for pre-schoolers; children under 4 must be with an adult. Blankets and pillows may be brought for viewing comfort. No tickets are needed.
On Wednesday, April 15, at 7 p.m., Storyteller Dot Kane will present her humorous show. No registration or tickets are necessary. All ages are welcome, but preschoolers must come with an adult.
On Thursday, April 16, as part of National Poetry Month, favorites Justin Roberts and Liam Davis will present a Songwriting Workshop for students in grades 6-12 at 7 p.m--NOTE: TIME IN HIGHLIGHTS IS INCORRECT. Small groups will compose the verse to a song which will be recorded and then be available after the program on a cd. Register online; class size is limited.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS
ADULT SERVICES:
AlexianConnects will present Treatment Options for Atrial Fibrillation on Monday, April 6, at 7 p.m. This common heart condition includes irregular and accelerated heartbeats. Find out about some of the newer treatments for this condition at this program. Register by calling 1-866-ALEXIAN (2539426).
The Morning Book Group will be meeting on Tuesday, April 7, at 10:30 a.m., to discuss Get Shorty by Elmore Leonard. The John Travolta film was based on this book about a small time hood who joins up with a B-movie producer. For more information, call Chris Mika at extension 272.
YOUTH SERVICES:
The annual Spring Fling: Bunny Hop and Hat Parade will be this week instead of Ready to Read and Storytime. The times are:
Tuesday, April 7, at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Wednesday, April 8, at 7 p.m.
Thursday, April 9, at 10 a.m.
Preschoolers and kindergartners are welcome to join in the festivities, which will include stories, puppet shows, fingerplays, and the special Hat Parade. The Spring Bunny will also be making her annual appearance. The children are encouraged to wear hats of any kind for the parade; instructions for making a paper-plate hat are available at the Youth Services Desk. No registration or tickets are needed.
This is the last week for weekly programs until the middle of June. Some special event programming will be coming up later in April and in May.

REMODELING CONTINUES

NORTH END REMODELING BEGINS
The remodeling of the North end of Adult Services began on Monday. All the old carpeting was removed and the furniture, book racks, CD racks, etc., were gone. The CDs are in the South end for now and the paperbacks and non-fiction collections are now accessible. Biographies, fiction, mysteries, large print, and magazines are not available except as they are returned and put on temporary shelves in the Large Meeting Room.

The copy machines and some public computers have been set up in the "Cafe" area. Time is limited to 30 minutes if patrons are waiting, and print jobs are being sent to the printer in the Youth Services Computer Lab:
