LIBRARY HAPPENINGS MARCH 29-APRIL 5
ADULT SERVICES:
The renovation is going to be moving on to the second stage this week. There will now be limited access to the South end of the Adult Services department and other areas will be unavailable:
Phase II starts Monday, March 30 and will last approximately 2-3 weeks. During this phase, the Computer Lab, Group Study Room, Magazine Room, and the Periodicals Storage Area will be inaccessible. In addition, the Fiction, Large Print, and Biography collections will not be available. There will also be limited access to Audiobooks on Cassette. There will be five computers set up in the community area for limited patron use. There will be access to the newly renovated south side of the area.
On Monday, March 29, at 7 p.m., Kathleen Obirek, Master Gardener and Certified Landscape Designer, will present the program Serenity Gardens. Learn how to transform an ordinary backyard into an oasis of peace and tranquility. Register online.
YOUTH SERVICES:
Regular storytimes and programs resume this week.
On Saturday, April 4, at 10 a.m., Nancy Parato Goldhagen, educator and author, will present her phonics-based reading program, Play & Read. Ms. Goldhagen will explain how her program works with pre-schoolers, helping them to pick up reading skills before they reach school age. Her books will also be available for purchase at that time. No registration is necessary. This program is for adults only.

YOUTH SERVICES:
Spring Break is this week, so special programs will replace Getting Ready to Read and Sci-Kidz. On Tuesday, March 24, at 11 a.m. and at 1 p.m. in Kids Corner the Large Meeting Room, Amazing Animals by Samantha will present Acro-Cats, a circus-themed performance by trained domestic cats. All ages are welcome, but preschoolers must come with an adult. Seating is limited, so Elk Grove Village residents will get preference. No tickets or registration is required. Strollers may be prohibited if there is a large crowd.
On Thursday, March 26, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the Metropolis Outreach Program--a branch of the Metropolis Theater--will present a Musical Instrument Petting Zoo. Children ages 5 to 18, are invited to drop in to Kids Corner the Large Meeting Room--no registration needed--and try out, touch, and listen to select musical instruments including the violin, piano, guitar, and percussion. They will be guided by professional teachers from the Arlington Heights school.
On Friday, March 27, at 10 a.m., the movie Bolt (rated PG) will be shown in Kids Corner the Large Meeting Room. All ages are welcome, but preschoolers must come with an adult. No registration or tickets are needed. Strollers may be prohibited.

The Wolves Winter Reading Program officially ended on Saturday. Congratulations to the many prize winners.

LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION CONTINUES
Monday this was the view towards the South windows--the furniture was stacked, the plants and paperback spinners were still there, and the Reference Books shelves were still in place:

ADULT SERVICES RENOVATION BEGINS
Preparations have started for the Adult Services renovations. The first few weeks will involve the South half of the area, near the windows.
The Reference Desk is gone:

ADULT SERVICES:
The Evening Book Group will be meeting on Tuesday, March 17, at 7:30 p.m., in Kids Corner, to discuss Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult--a young boy, apparently fed up with bullying, brings guns to school and opens fire. For more information, call Chris Mika at extension 271.
The Computer Class Internet Basics will be offered on Saturday, March 21, at 2 p.m.--for patrons with no or little online experience to learn about urls, hyperlinks, addresses, and more. Attendees must already be able to use a computer mouse. For more information and to register, call extension 272.
Renovation Construction is set to begin this week in Adult Services. For these first three weeks or so, materials at the south end--paperbacks, reference, nonfiction, etc.--will be of limited availability (if at all).
The Elk Grove Artists Association is currently hosting the annual Trees Exhibit--a juried show--in the Large Meeting Room. Drop in and see the art on view.
YOUTH SERVICES:
On Monday evening, March 16, the Semi-finals and Finals of the 2009 Battle of the Books for 4th and 5th grades will be held starting at 6 p.m. Following the Final Battle, refreshments will be served for all participants in the program and their families.
On Saturday, March 21, the final raffles will be held for the Wolves' Winter Reading Program starting at 11 a.m. First the final weekly drawings (white tickets) will be held. Then the drawings will be held for the red-ticket items in the small bins.
On Saturday, March 21, a special showing of the recent film Twilight will be held at 1:30 p.m. For students in grades 6 and up. Register online.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS MARCH 9-15
ADULT SERVICES:
The Illinois WORKNET/IDES department will be conducting a monthly series of Workshops on Effective Resumes, Interviewing, and Job Search Techniques beginning Monday, March 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The other two workshops will be held on April 13 and May 11. Register online.
On Friday night, March 13, the Library will be open from 7-10 p.m for patrons interested in testing our new Multimedia Room's Wii games and other multimedia programs at the first Got Game? Night. Patrons between the ages of 12 and 17 may attend but must have a signed Parental Permission Slip (available at the Adult Reference Desk). Register online.
YOUTH SERVICES:
Teen Tech Week started today, March 8, andf runs through Saturday, March 14. This year's theme is Press Play@Your Library. As part of this theme, a Preview of the New Multimedia Room will be set up in the Large Meeting Room from 3:30 to 8:30 this week, Monday through Thursday. On Thursday evening, from 7:30 to 9 p.m., Young Adults in grades 6-12 are invited to join an Evening of Wii Games and Snacks in Kids Corner. Attendees will each receive a raffle ticket that could win an I-Pod. Limited to 24 patrons. Register online. Receive raffle tickets as well by playing Matching Games (pick up a sheet at the YS Reference Desk) and getting a perfect score.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS MARCH 2-8
ADULT SERVICES:
The Morning Book Group will be meeting on Tuesday, March 3, at 10:30 a.m., to discuss Jim the Boy by Tony Earley--a 10-year-old in a 1934 small North Carolina town begins to grow up as his world expands beyond his neighborhood. For more information call Chris Mika at extension 272.
A bus trip is planned to go see the musical Chicago on Wednesday, March 4. $59 tickets will include the bus, lower balconey seats, and a bag lunch. Check at the Reception Desk for more information and for ticket availability.
The Adult Winter Reading Program ends Sunday, March 8, with a viewing of Roustabout, starring Elvis Presley, at 2 p.m. The raffle winners will be announced and refreshments will be served. For more information call extension 272.
YOUTH SERVICES:
The new session of the Babysitter's Training Course begins on Saturday, March 7--continuing the following Saturday, March 14--at 10:30 a.m. For children ages 10-16, this two week course will include fun activities, group discussions, and practice role-playing. Attendees must come to both sessions in order to receive the completion certificate. A lunch, a drink, and a diaperable doll or stuffed toy must be brought to the sessions. There is also a $10 fee that covers the cost of a book and other materials. Registration is online, but is not complete until the fee is paid at the Youth Services Desk.
