SPECIAL FRIDAY MOVIE THIS WEEK

On Friday, October 31, there will be a special movie showing at 10 a.m. in Youth Services, of the film Slightly Scary Stories for Halloween. No tickets are needed. All ages are welcome. Children younger than kindergarten age must come with an adult.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS OCTOBER 27-NOVEMBER 2

ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, October 27, from 4-7 p.m., a local podiatrist will be providing Free Podiatry Screenings. Tests will be used for determining common foot problems like heel and ankle pain, bunions, hammertoes, and fungal nails, among other problems. Registration for appointments is required. One Computer Class is offered this week, Internet Basics, on Saturday, November 1, at 2:15 p.m.--for those patrons who are totally unfamiliar with the Internet. Toolbars, URLs, addresses, and hyperlinks will all be discussed. Participants must be able to use a computer mouse. Register online or call extension 271. There is currently a Waiting List for this class.

YOUTH SERVICES:
This week the regular Ready-to-Read classes will not meet because the annual Halloween Parties for children up to Kindergarten age will be presented. There will be skits, a puppet show, the exciting Parade through the library, and a special surprise treat. There is no registration necessary. The times are:
Tuesday, October 28, at 10 a.m. and at 1 p.m.
Wednesday, October 29, at 7 p.m.
Thursday, October 30, at 10 a.m.
Children are invited to wear costumes. Photos are encouraged.

On Friday, October 31, there will be Trick-or-Treating at various stations in the Library all day until closing at 7 p.m.

Registration for the 2009 Battle of the Books for 4th and 5th grades has begun. Registration must be in person at the Youth Services Desk with a parent since permission slips signed by a parent are necessary to complete registration. Teams should have a name, as well, if possible. Registration ends Friday, November 7. There is also a mandatory informational meeting scheduled for Tuesday, November 18, at 6 p.m. NOTE: this is the correct date; the date given in Highlights and Bookworm is incorrect.

There are still openings for the upcoming Chess Tournament on Saturday, November 7, at 1:30 p.m. Participants do not have to have taken the classes offered here. It is open to any student in kindergarten through 12th grade. Register online.

Games for the Playstation 2 are now available in Youth Services. There are also games for Wii, Playstation 3, and X-Box 360. They circulate for one week and there is a limit of two games per card.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS OCTOBER 20-26

ADULT SERVICES:
Tonight, Monday, October 20, at 7 p.m., a Raggedy Ann Doll Workshop will be presented by Kathy Bradshaw. Learn special techniques to make a simple ragdoll into a polished professional-looking "Doll". Register online.

YOUTH SERVICES:
Registration for the 4th/5th grade 2009 Battle of the Books begins today. Individuals should have their teams set up and a name picked for their team. A parent must come in with the child and fill out a permission slip. This registration must be in person at the Youth Services Desk. The final day for registration is Friday, November 7.
There will be a mandatory informational meeting on Tuesday, November 18 , at 6 p.m. (NOTE: this is a corrected date; the information in the Highlights and Bookworm is incorrect). Teams will be finalized at this time.

Registration for the Chess Tournament, scheduled for Saturday, November 8, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., begins Saturday, October 25 online. This is open to any child who is interested; participants do not need to have been in the classes.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS OCTOBER 13-19

ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday evening, October 13, the film Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, starring Frances McDormand and Amy Adams, will be shown at 7 p.m. McDormand plays a recently fired governess with no resources who hires herself out as an assistant to an ambitious young actress in 1939 London. It is rated PG-13. No tickets are necessary.

YOUTH SERVICES:
On Monday, October 13, a special Columbus Day program will be held at 11 a.m. and at 1:30 p.m. The Amazing Adventure Show, will feature 10 animals, introduced and described by Samantha, professional animal trainer. Some animals may be available for petting; some may do "tricks". All ages are invited; preschoolers must be accompanied by an adult. No tickets are needed, but (since seating is limited), Elk Grove residents will have priority.

This week, from October 12-18, is the annual Teen Read Week. The theme this year is Books with Bite at Your Library. There is currently a display of teen books featuring vampires in the Young Adult area. All week teens can earn "raffle" tickets for gift cards by completing Young Adult book recommendation forms; ask at the YS reference desk.

On Thursday, October 16, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., the program YA Wii Byte and Bite will be held. Participate in several Wii games and taste compare pizza, cola, and chocolate chip cookies. There is currently a Waiting List for this event.

On Friday, October 17, from 4:30-6 p.m., the first class of a 4-week workshop on Creating Your Own Computer Game with SCRATCH will be held. This class also has a Waiting List.

On Saturday, October 18, the first sessions of Chess with Checkmates will begin. At 1 p.m., the class will be for children in grades K-2--there are still openings. At 2:15 p.m. the class will be for children in grades 3-5; this class has a Waiting List. At 3:30 p.m. the class will be for Young Adults in grades 6-12; this class has openings.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS OCTOBER 6-12

ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, October 7, at 7 p.m., Attorney John Pankau will present a program on Wills & Trusts: Part I. Planning an estate, how to avoid costly errors, and recent changes in state and federal tax laws will be among the topics covered. Register online or by phone.

Two Internet Computer Classes will be offered this week:
Internet Basics on Wednesday, October 8, at 2 p.m.--for anyone who is unfamiliar with the Internet and wants to learn about toolbars, URLs, and hyperlinks [There is a Waiting List for this class.]
Internet: Beyond the Basics on Sunday, October 12, at 2:15 p.m.--for anyone already familiar with the Internet who wants to learn shortcuts and tricks for easier navigation of the World Wide Web [There are openings for this class.]
Register for these classes online or by phone. Participants must be able to use a computer mouse; class size is limited.

On Friday, October 10, a bus trip is planned for the day, A Wisconsin Tasting Tour. Taste the jelly beans at the Jelly Belly factory, learn about making--and tasting--kringle in Racine, eat lunch at Racine's Chartroom Restaurant, sample the beer at the Miller Brewing Company, and finish with samples at the Mars Cheese Castle. Tickets are available at the Reception Desk for $57.

YOUTH SERVICES:
This week marks the return of the Firefighter Storytimes. Always, of course, dependent on the availability of a firefighter (they may have to go out on a call), they are scheduled for Tuesday, October 7, at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 8, at 7 p.m., and Thursday, October 9, at 10 a.m. No registration is needed for these classes. All ages are welcome.

There are still openings for SciKidz on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4, for the YA Bite and Byte at 6:30 on October 16, and for the Chess Classes starting on Saturday, October 18, at 1 p.m. (grades k-2), and at 3:30 (grades 6 and up). Register online.
