LIBRARY HAPPENINGS APRIL 28-MAY 4
ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, April 28, at 7 p.m., Bryce Word will present a program about PACE--it's history, current options, Elk Grove routes, and other available services. Register online.
On Friday, May 2, the Computer Class Microsoft Word will be presented at 11 a.m.--learn the basics of creating a document, editing it, and saving it. Register online; class size is limited. Attendees must be able to use a computer mouse.
YOUTH SERVICES:
On Wednesday, April 30, the Finals for the YA Battle of the Books will be held in the evening.
On Saturday, May 3, the monthly Make-It-and-Take-It Drop-in Craft will be available from 9 a.m. until closing at 5 p.m. No registration is necessary; ask at the Youth Services Reference Desk.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS APRIL 21-27
ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, April 21, the Friends will be holding their annual meeting at 6:30 p.m. At 7 p.m., all members of the Friends are invited to attend a special, excusive program (Friends only) on Famous Comedy Teams presented by Bob Allen from Roosevelt University. Famous comedy duos and groups from the early part of the 20th Century through the 60's will be discussed; audio and visual clips will enhance the presentation. Anyone can join the Friends before the program; sign up at the Registration Desk.
On Thursday, April 24, at 2:30 p.m., the Computer Class, Beginning Excel, will be offered--learn to create spreadsheets and charts, to format cells, and to sort the resulting data. Participants must be able to use a computer mouse; Register online ( though there is currently a Waiting List for this class).
On Friday, April 25, a Bus Trip to Discovery World in Pier, Wisconsin, is planned. The group will leave the Library at 8 a.m., and return by 4 p.m. Part of this visiit includes the Reiman Aquarium and a dry-docked schooner, the "Challenge". On the way back, a lunch stop is planned for the Gasthaus Restaurant near Milwaukee. The cost is $69; register at the Information desk.

OPEN HOUSE FOR CONSTRUCTION CONCLUSION
On Sunday, April 13, the Library hosted an Open House to showcase the recent renovations. The new Browsing Bookshelves even had books on them from both Adult and Youth Services:

There was music--beautifully performed by the lovely, talented pianist/singer Ester Hanna:

who was situated in the entrance lobby across from Circulation and just outside the Trees Exhibit:

There were refreshments; cookies provided by the Friends)

beverages--tea as well as coffee from the new Cafe' area, and water , too

and fresh popcorn

There were Freebies--CD opener/cleaner/pens, sturdy bags, and folding pocket pens:

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS APRIL 14-20
ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, April 14, at 7 p.m., the movie Elizabeth: The Golden Age starring Cate Blanchett, will be shown. This Oscar winning film (for Costume Design) continues the story of Queen Elizaqbeth I, concentrating on events in 1588 and on Elizabeth's relationship with Sir Walter Raleigh. No tickets are needed. Rated PG-13.
Two Computer Classes are scheduled for this week:
Windows Explorer on Wednesday, April 16, at 2:30 p.m.--organize your PC by creating files and folders in Windows XP
Internet Basics on Saturday, April 19, at 2:15 p.m.--learn to use toolbars, hyperlinks, and Internet addresses and get started on exploring the World Wide Web
All participants must be able to use a computer mouse. Register online; class size is limited. [Both classes currently have a waiting list.]
YOUTH SERVICES:
This week is National Library Week. As part of this celebration, two special programs have been scheduled in Youth Services.
On Tuesday, April 15, at 10 a.m., Bill Hooper will present his Active Music for Kids. This interactive musical program is for preschoolers through kindergarten. No tickets are needed. Parents or responsible adults must accompany attending children. Seating is limited.
On Saturday, April 19, children of all ages are invited to see the Yo-Yo Man (aka Barry North) for a performance of yoyo tricks and demonstrations. Children 8 and up can bring their own yoyos (or use one of Mr. North's) and get a hands-on lesson. No tickets are needed, but space is limited. Children kindergarten age and under must come with an adult.
April is also National Poetry Month. To help celebrate, Dr. G (aka Craig Sjogerman) will return for a special Poetry Workshop for Young Adults in grades 6-12. Write an original poem with Dr. G's help, bring poems you have already written--or just enjoy--, and possibly share them with the other participants. Snacks and prizes will also be available. It starts at 6:30; register online; attendance is limited.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE AS OF THURSDAY APRIL10
Everything is just about finished. The new "adult sized" tables have finally arrived in Youth Services:

There are also new "lounge" chairs (they swivel):

as well as lounge chairs and little sofas near the Young Adult section:


The tops for the bookcases in the Browsing Area have (mostly) arrived, too:

The Self-Check Machine is now functioning--for books only, though:

There is now a single-serving-at-a-time coffee maker in the WiFi Lounge --the coffee makings can be purchased at the Circulation desk for $1; it is available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. only--beverages are only allowed in the lobby and in the Skylight area:


The Open House is tomorrow, Sunday, April 13. from 2-4 p.m. There will be music, balloons, treats, the Art Show, and a chance to win prizes as well as a special opportunity to view the finished results up close.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS APRIL 7-13
ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, April 7, Dr. Ranae Yockey, a board-certified gynecologist/obstetrician, will discuss menopause, especially as it relates to the development of osteoporosis--Osteoporosis/Menopause--at 7 p.m. Tests, treatment, and prevention will be part of the presentation. Also on Monday, April 7, at 7 p.m., the Computer Class, Microsoft Word, will be offered--newcomers to the world of computers will learn how to create a document, save, and edit it. Paticipants must be able to use a computer mouse. Register online; class size is limited. There is currently a Waiting List for this class.
The Morning Book Group will meet on Tuesday, April 8, at 10:30 a.m., to discuss Enduring Love by Ian McEwan--a rescue attempt ends in tragedy and also results in one would-be rescuer stalking another, changing their lives. For more information, call Chris Mika at extension 271.
The long-awaited-for Open House will be held on Sunday, April 13, from 2-4 p.m. This opportunity to celebrate the conclusion of the recent renovation of the entrance and circulation areas of the library will include refreshments, entertainment--pianist Ester Hanna in the Lobby and Tony Will, the Balloon Man, in Youth Services--, and a trivia game with prizes. The Art Association Trees Exhibit will still be going on as well.
YOUTH SERVICES:
This is the final week for Spring Storytimes and Programs. The weekly programs will resume in the middle of June as part of the Summer Reading Program.
The next monthly session of Diane Ledit's Creative Writing Workshops will be on Saturday, April 12, at 11 a.m. This class is for children in grades 6-8. Register online.
