LIBRARY HAPPENINGS MARCH 31-APRIL 6

ADULT SERVICES:
Learn about the History of Dr. Scholl and the development of his almost a century-old company at this special program sponsored by the Friends of the Library on Monday, March 31, at 7 p.m. Register online.

Only one Computer Class is offered this week: Internet: Beyond the Basics on Friday, April 4, at 9:15 a.m.--learn how to navigate the World Wide Web more efficiently using shortcuts and tricks. Participants must be able to use a computer mouse. Register online: class size is limited.. This class has been cancelled.

YOUTH SERVICES:
The regular Storytimes and other Spring Classes resume this week for just two weeks.

On Saturday, April 5, there will be another Make-It-&-Take-It Craft available at the Youth Services Desk. Just drop in and ask for it; no registration necessary. It will last all day or until supplies run out.

LABELS AND ATHLETIC SHOES

There are two new "repositories" now available in the skylight area of the new lobby.

One is a more up-to-date receptacle for Campbells product labels that the Friends use to get books and equipment for the Library:

There is also a temporary bin for the Nike Reuse-a-Shoe Recycling event.

Until May 4, patrons can drop in the bin any brand of athletic shoes. They will be ground up and used for making sports activities surfaces. However, the shoes cannot have any metal or cleats, they cannot be wet or damp, and they cannot be dress shoes.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE AS OF FRIDAY MARCH 21

Actually, not much is going on. Furniture has been moved about in the Lobby area, but they're still waiting for some shelf tops to arrive for the new Browsing Area. There are some new plants next to the sliding doors at the Main Entry.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS MARCH 24-30

ADULT SERVICES:
Only one Computer Class is being offered this week:
Microsoft Word on Tuesday, March 25, at 2 p.m.--learn to create documents, save them, and edit them. Participants must be able to use a computer mouse. Register online; class size is limited.

YOUTH SERVICES:
This week the local school districts are having Spring Break. For this week, there will be no regularly scheduled Storytimes or Science classes. Instead, two special programs have been scheduled:
Reggio the Hoofer will be performing on Tuesday, March 25, at 11 a.m. Learn how tap dancing has evolved over the centuries in this light-hearted demonstration for all ages.
The Wright Stuff, a musical production by Face to Face Productions, will be performed on Thursday, March 27, at 11 a.m., depicting the lives of the two brothers who developed an airplane that flew.
Both of these programs are for all ages, but preschoolers must be accompanied by an adult. No tickets are required, but seating is limited.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS (4th-5th GRADES) WINNERS

The semi-finals and finals were held on Tuesday night. The Results were:
1st Place--The Reading Monkelettes from Link School
2nd Place--The Rapid Readers from Stevenson and Dooley Schools
3rd Place--The 4 Bookateers from Queen of the Rosary School
4th Place--Federal Book Investigators from Nerge School

The final battle was won by only 3 points. 49 teams participated this year. Each team (3 or 4 children on each team) read 40 books. Good job, all!

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS MARCH 17-23

ADULT SERVICES:
Enjoy a St. Patrick's Day Special at the library on Monday evening at 7 p.m. Watch that all-time favorite Irish movie The Quiet Man starring John Wayne and Maureen OHara while nibbling on special "Irish" treats. For this program, register online. Attendance is limited to 30.

Two Computer Classes are scheduled for this week:
Internet Basics on Monday, March 17, at 9:30 a.m.--for newbies interested in what the Internet is and how to start using it
Beginning Excel on Thursday, March 20 at 10:30 a.m.--learn to make spreadsheets and charts, to format cells, to use simple formulas, and how to sort data
Both classes require that participants already know how to use a computer mouse. Register online; class size is limited.

The Evening Book Group will be meeting on Tuesday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m., to discuss Philippa Gregory's The Queen's Fool--a Spanish, Jewish girl with The Sight comes to live at the Tudor court as a "Holy Fool". For more information, call Chris Mika at extension 271.

YOUTH SERVICES:

This week sees the return of the traditional Spring Fling Bunny Hop and Hat Parade featuring the Spring Bunny. There will be stories, a puppet show, and the highly anticipated opportunity to parade around the whole library displaying fancy hats. Any hat may be worn, but directions for making a Paper Plate Hat can be found at the Youth Reference Desk. Thes special programs are for Preschoolers through Kindergartners and replace the usual Storytimes. No registration is required:
Tuesday, March 18, at 10 a.m or at 1:30 p.m.
Wednesday, March 19, at 10 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 7 p.m.
Thursday, March 20, at 10 a.m.

The Battle of the Books will conclude on Tuesday, March 18, with the Final Battles between the 4 top scoring teams. The semi-finals will be at 6 p.m. and at 6:30 p.m. The Final Battle will be around 7 p.m. and everyone who has been in the program and their families are invited to attend this one. There will be refreshments.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS MARCH 8-16

ADULT SERVICES:
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End starring Johnnie Depp and Chow Yun Fat (among others) will be shown in the Large Meeting Room on Monday, March 8, at 7 p.m. No tickets are necessary, but seating is limited. Rated PG-13.

A Computer Class on Windows Explorer will be offered on Wednesday, March 12, at 10:30 a.m.--organize your computer by creating files and folders. Participants must be able to use a computer mouse. Register online; class size is limited.

YOUTH SERVICES:
Storytimes continue this week, but next week, most of the regular programs will have the Spring Fling Bunny Hop and Hat Parade instead.

TEEN TECH WEEK 2008

This week is Teen Tech Week. The theme for 2008 is Tune in @ Your Library. We are sponsoring an online Scavenger Hunt for students in 6th grade and up. It can be played at home or in the library and the prizes will be candy (the number of pieces will be dependent on the number of correct answers). The object is to find 12 'sprites" hidden on various pages of the Kids Korner section of the EGVPL web-site.. Clues are provided on a "Cheat Sheet" page. Just go to Kids Korner and click on the Teen Tech Week sign right in the middle. It will connect to the information about the game.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS MARCH 3-9

ADULT SERVICES:
Alexian Connects will be sponsoring the program Do I Have Allergies? on Monday, March 3, at 7 p.m. in the Large Meeting Room. Allergist Dr. John Szpindor will discuss the various types of indoor and outdoor allergies and what can be done to diagnose them and how to cope with them. Register for this program by calling 1-866-ALEXIAN (253-9426).

YOUTH SERVICES:
This is the last week for the Wolves' Read To Succeed Reading Program. The final drawings will be held on Saturday, March 8 at 11 a.m. The weekly white ticket raffle will be first, then the red ticket, box items will be raffled.

Two other programs will be occurring on Saturday. The next monthly Creative Writing Workshop for 6-8th graders will be at 11 a.m. (register online). And the first of two Babysitting Classes will be held from 10:30-2:30 (participants must attend BOTH sessions this week and next week, the 15th). Register online. Note: registration is provisional until the $10 fee is paid in person at the Youth Services Desk--the fee covers the cost of a book and other materials. Attendees must be between 10 and 16 years of age.
