LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JANUARY 28-FEBRUARY 3
ADULT SERVICES:
Monday, January 28, is the first day to sign up for the Adult Winter Reading Program--A Tome Tasting: Mysteries for the Discriminating Connoisseur. Patrons only have to read 3 books from the suggested lists by March 15 to be eligible for the program-ending prize raffles. A limited number of enrollees on the first day only will receive an incentive prize.
A related program, Wine 101, will be presented on Monday evening, January 28, at 7 p.m. Christina Anderson Heller from the Lynfred Winery in Roselle, Illinois, will discuss the different types of wines, choosing the best ones to go with a particular type of meal, and how to properly taste wine. [Unfortunately, no actual wine can be tasted.] Sign up online.
The only Computer Class for this week is Microsoft Word 2000 on Tuesday, January 29, at 2 p.m.--learn how to use this program to create documents, save them, and edit them. Participants must be able to use a computer mouse. Sign up online; class size is limited.
YOUTH SERVICES:
The annual Preschool Fair will be held on Thursday, January 31, from 7-8:30 p.m. Local nursery schools and day care centers will have representatives available to provide personal information for parents seeking to find the best fit for their young children. This is a free program; no registration is required.
On Saturday, February 2, from 9:30 to 4:30 (approximately)--or until supplies run out--a special Drop-In Craft will be available for interested children. No registration is necessary.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE AS OF WEDNESDAY JANUARY 23
As we get closer to completion, fewer changes are visible. The shelving in the Browsing Area has been re-aligned:

A shelf has been added below the new inside bookdrops (festooned with tape and paper to discourage anyone from actually dropping books through since it is not ready in the workroom as yet):

The lights have been turned on in the display shelves in the lobby and just inside the door to Adult Services--more chairs, too:

The first weekend in February is projected as the time when Circulation will move into their new quarters since the Large Meeting Room will be needed for the upcoming Primary Election.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JANUARY 21-27
ADULT SERVICES:
Chinese New Year is February 7 this year. Get a head start on the festivities by learning how to make authentic Chinese dishes at Celebrate the Chinese New Year with Ying Stoller, author of Ying's Chinese Cookbook: Authentic but Simple, on Monday, January 21, at 7 p.m. Recipes and tasting opportunities will be available. Sign up online.
One Computer Class is offered this week, Internet Basics, on Saturday, January 26, at 2:15 p.m.--learn what toolbars, hyperlinks, and Internet addresses are and how they can be used to find information on the World Wide Web. Participants must be able to use a computer mouse. Register online; class size is limited.
YOUTH SERVICES:
On Monday, January 21, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, American Eagle Productions will present a musical adaptation of Shel Silverstein's Where the Sidewalk Ends at 11 a.m. Recommended for ages 4 and up; preschoolers must come with an adult. No tickets are needed, but seating is limited. Elk Grove Village residents will be given priority.
As part of the Winter Reading Program, Chicago Wolves player Right Wing Jesse Schultz will be at the Library on Tuesday, January 22, from 7-8 p.m. As part of his appearance he will talk about his experiences, put a Wolves uniform on one of the attending children, and sign autographs. No registration or tickets are needed. [It's very early this year.]
It is not too late to sign up for the Read to Succeed Reading Program. Stop in any time at the Youth Services Desk. Earn 2 raffle tickets for every 30 minutes of reading (up to 14 hours worth a week)--one ticket is for a weekly raffle and one ticket is for the final raffle at the end of the program in March. Prizes include Wolves t-shirts, Skates dolls, knit hats, and more.
This week also is the beginning of Winter Storytimes and Classes, running through April 10.
Book Babies (for ages 6-18 months with an adult)--Mondays from 10-10:20 a.m.
Lapsit (for ages 18 months-2 1/2 years with an adult)--Mondays from 10:30-10:50 a.m.
NEW: Twilight Tales (for ages 6 months-2 1/2 years with an adult)--Thursdays from 6:30-6:50 p.m.
Storytime (all ages and parents are welcome) --Wednesdays at 10 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 7 p.m.
No registration is necessary for these classes.

Getting Ready to Read (for ages 3 1/2 & up with adult)--
Tuesdays from 10-10:45 a.m. and from 1:30-2:15 p.m.
Thursdays from 10-10:45 a.m.
SciKidz (for 1st-3rd graders)--Tuesdays from 4-4:45 p.m.
Y-Sci (for 4th graders & up)--Thursdays from4-4:45 p.m.
Children who attend these classes are eligible for the weekly raffle drawing. Winners will get a $10 Barnes &Noble Gift Card.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE AS OF WEDNESDAY JANUARY 16
Completion of the renovations is getting closer. Finishing touches are being added daily. The shelving units for the Browsing Area

and (I think) the Holds Area

have arrived. The new Book Drops have been installed in the Circulation Room wall:


The "buttons" have all been finally attached to the white rectangles:

The lower section of counter at the Checkout Desk has now been designated "Registration/Information":

And, the wall fountain is no longer leaking.

ADULT SERVICES:
Two Computer Classes are being offered this week:
Internet: Beyond the Basics on Monday, January 14, at 9:15 a.m.--learn some tricks and shortcuts for navigating the Internet more efficiently
Heritage Quest and Ancestry Databases on Thursday, January 17, at 9:30 a.m.--learn how to use these databases for researching family history

The Evening Book Group is scheduled to discuss A Green Journey by Jon Hassler on Tuesday, January 15, at 7 p.m.--a retired teacher travels to Ireland. For more information call Chris Mika at extension 271.
YOUTH SERVICES:
This week marks the beginning of the Winter Storytime programs, introduced by special Puppet Show Programs for Preschoolers on Tuesday, January 15, at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, January 16, at 7 p.m., and on Thursday, January 17, at 10 a.m.--the regular Storytimes begin next week. All ages are welcome; no registration is required.
On Saturday, January 19, the Wolves Winter Reading Program: Read to Succeed will start. On this first sign-up day only, from 9:30-4:30, there will be a special raffle for Wolves replica jerseys. Everyone who signs up will also get a special chocolate-y treat, and a possibility of receiving another prize. In addition, Toby Markham will be back this year from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., this time as Willy Wonka.

ADULT SERVICES:
There are two computer classes scheduled for this week:
Windows Explorer on Tuesday, January 8, at 2:30 p.m.--organize your PC through files and folders
Beginning Excel on Thursday, January 10, at 2:30 p.m.--learn about cells, charts, graphs, and spreadsheets
Sign up for both classes Online. Class size is limited. Participants must be able to use a computer mouse.
The Morning Book Group will be meeting on Tuesday, January 8 at 10:30 a.m. They will be discussing Mark Salzman's The Soloist--a child musical prodigy loses his genius as he matures, but a jury summons and a prodigy student change his outlook on life. For more information call Chris Mika at extension 271.
YOUTH SERVICES:
One of the most popular program leaders that have appeared at the Library has been Shannon Townsend, manga artist Kenmei Rokugatsu. She is moving to Wisconsin this month. Her Final Appearance at our Library will be this coming Thursday, January 10, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. This Anime and Manga Art Class is for students in grades 6 to 12. Register Online.
The Creative Writing Workshop will start again on Saturday, January 12, at 11 a.m. This one-hour monthly (second Saturdays through May) program is for students in grades 6, 7, & 8. Published author Diane Ledet is the teacher. Register Online.

What with the holidays and the need to await the arrival of some materials, not much more is visibly changed. However, the wall fountain is operational. It's hard to show in the photos, but water drips/pours down the metal panels into the river-stone lined trough and there are lights at the top:
