LIBRARY HAPPENINGS DECEMBER 31-JANUARY 6
The Library will be CLOSED at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 31 and will be closed all day on Tuesday, January 1. It will reopen on Wednesday, January 2, at 9 a.m.
This week the Youth Services department will host two programs for children.
On Wednesday, January 2, Dave Rudolf will host a Beach Party at 11a.m. Expect hula hoops, bubble machines, and lots of music. No tickets are necessary. All ages welcome. Space is limited, however, and Elk Grove residents will have preference.
On Friday, January 4, Andy Head--Wonderful Wacky Juggler--will perform at 11 a.m. All ages are welcome, no tickets are necessary, and space is limited so Elk Grove residents will have preference.
At both programs, prechoolers must come with an adult.
ADDITION:
Since this coming Saturday is the first of the month, Youth Services will be continuing its program of a Drop-In Craft lasting all day, 9-5, while supplies last, Make-It-and-Take-It Craft.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE AS OF FRIDAY DECEMBER 21
The phone is back in the lobby, along with some chairs and a little table:

There are chairs in the workroom now, as well:

For a short time the front doors were blocked so the security gates could be reinstalled:

The old doors to Youth Services have been replaced by a window:

The glass has finally been placed in the workroom door near the Wireless Cafe

and in the wall and door behind the Checkout Counter:

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS DECEMBER 24-30
ADULT SERVICES:
Microsoft Word 2002 is the only Computer Class offered this week. It will be held on Friday, December 28, at 11 a.m.--learn basic techniques for creating, saving, and editing documents. Participants must be able to use a computer mouse. Register online; class size is limited.
YOUTH SERVICES:
Author Janet Riehecky will be returning on Thursday, December 27, at 11 a.m., for another Dinosaur Encounters Program, this time for children in Kindergarten and up. Besides stories, Ms Riehecky will have fossils and casts to examine. No tickets are needed, but--as space is limited--EGV residents will have preference.
On Friday, December 28, The movie Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (PG13) will be shown at 10 a.m. No tickets are necessary, but space is limited.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE AS OF MONDAY DECEMBER 17
Things are getting close to looking finished, but, apparently, will not actually be totally done until January (some supplies will not be available until then). Meanwhile, more furniture has appeared--and has been used by a number of patrons already.
More chairs are now in the Cafe area:

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS DECEMBER 17-23
ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday evening at 7 p.m., December 17, the annual Mom's Night Out program will present the opportunity for adults to make Holiday Gift Bags. Register online; space is limited.
The Computer Class this week is Beginning Excel on Tuesday, December 18, at 10:30 a.m.--learn about formatting cells, making graphs and charts, and how to use a spreadsheet. Participants must be able to use a computer mouse and be familiar with Windows XP. Register online; space is limited.
YOUTH SERVICES:
On Wednesday, December 19, the Northwest Suburban Youth Holiday Brass will perform in the Youth Services Department at 7 p.m. The group includes students from Holmes JHS in Mt. Prospect and from Grove JHS in Elk Grove.
REMINDER: THE LIBRARY WILL BE CLOSED ON MONDAY, DECEMBER 24, AND TUESDAY, DECEMBER 25.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE AS OF THURSDAY DECEMBER 13
To the north of the Large Meeting Room a water-wall type fountain has been installed--it's not running as yet (though I did see it in action briefly earlier in the day):

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE AS OF TUESDAY DECEMBER 11
The workmen were finishing carpet laying when I got to work today. There is now carpeting all the way to the Youth Services entrance:

There are even new carpet sections in Youth Services:

The counter-tops in that area have been uncovered--black and white marble look:

The tables and chairs for both the Cafe and Browsing areas have arrived, too:

They've installed doors (not quite finished, though) at the entries to the Circulation Workroom; one leading to the Cafe:

Internet Basics on Monday, December 10, at 9:30 a.m.--learn about toolbars, URLs, and more in this introduction to the World Wide Web
Windows Explorer on Friday, December 14, at 10:30 a.m.--learn about files and folders and organize your PC

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE AS OF FRIDAY DECEMBER 7
Not too much to show today.
The wooden barrier is now gone on the other side of the rotunda area:

More carpeting has been installed:

There is now some edging between the wood flooring and the carpeting:

The rotunda are seems very echo-y now ( as the little kids like to test!).

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE AS OF THURSDAY DECEMBER 6
There is still a lot of painting going on in the workroom, but the floors are progressing, too.
The fencing has been removed that surrounded the wood floor section:

Edging segments are being placed around the tiled section:

Some carpeting has been installed leading into Adult Services:

They have also finished installing the opaque windows near the bathrooms:

The new bookdrop openings will be, apparently, right by the Wireless Cafe; the holes aren't cut all the way through, yet:

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE AS OF TUESDAY DECEMBER 4
It's been almost a week since I took pictures and a lot has been accomplished since then. The tile flooring for that section of the lobby is finished:

There is new shelving near the checkout desk:

There is a lot of painting going on. They have painted near the bathrooms (note the opaque windows being installed:

They were painting in the circulation workroom:

They've installed some opaque glass in the workroom wall, too:

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS DECEMBER 3-9
ADULT SERVICES:
On Tuesday, December 9, the Morning Book Group will meet at 10:30 a.m. Instead of a specific book all would read, it will be Reader's Choice (I'm assuming it will be up to the attendees to bring in a favorite book to recommend to the other group members). However, for more--and probably accurate--information, call Chris Mika at extension 271.
On Saturday, December 8, the Computer Class Internet: Beyond the Basics will be offered at 2:15 p.m. Learn some tricks and shortcuts to make using the Internet more effective. Attendees must be able to use a computer mouse. Register Online through the new Adult Services Online Calender.
YOUTH SERVICES:
Holiday Crafts continue this week:
Tuesday, December 4, at 4 p.m.--3rd-5th graders
Thursday, December 6, at 4 p.m.--1st-2nd graders
On Wednesday, December 5, at 7 p.m., 6th-12 graders can participate in a YA Craft: fringed fleece blankets.
