CONSTRUCTION AS OF MONDAY OCTOBER 29

The coolest thing on Monday was watching the electrician move this machine and go up and down on it:
electrician%20on%20cool%20machine.jpg

He was installing hanging bars for the new rotunda lighting:
hanging%20bars%20for%20new%20lights.jpg

Lights are already hanging on the bars on the West side of the rotunda:

Another picture of the same view:

Here's a closer view of those lights:
closer%20view%20of%20lights%20on%20bars.jpg

Progress is also being made on the main entry itself; the connecting doorway from the lobby seems larger now:

CONSTRUCTION AS OF FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26

It actually doesn't look like much is happening from the public side; it's all in the electrical and structural changes "behind the plastic curtain". Here are a few pictures taken on Friday, mostly after the workers had left.
The plastic hadn't been put down yet, so I got a picture looking from the rotunda side towards the new workroom framing:
Looking%20at%20the%20framing%20for%20the%20circ%20wrkrm.jpg

Here's a look into the workroom from the lobby side:
Looking%20into%20the%20wrkrm%20from%20lobby%20side.jpg

Looking towards the old bathrooms:
Looking%20towards%20old%20bathrooms%20from%20rotunda.jpg

Piles of thin boards (?) ready to be installed:
Piles%20of%20thin%20panels.jpg

Looking into the workroom from the area of the old doorway, insulation is seen ready to be installed (I assume):
insulation%20ready%20to%20be%20installed.jpg

Looks like new light fixtures are being installed:
New%20light%20fixtures.jpg

Later, the area had been closed off again by the plastic curtain and yellow tape; the new "footprint" for the area can be seen in the floor:
Cordoned%20off%20with%20a%20cement%20footprint.jpg

The area under the skylight has had some equipment moved into it:
Under%20the%20skylight%20with%20equipment.jpg

Because of the unavailability of the Large Meeting Room, the annual Art Show has had to set up in the small area between the Computer Lab and the Quiet Study/Periodical Room:

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE AS OF FRIDAY OCTOBER 19

Well, the check-out desk is no more. There is nothing left under the skylight.
When I got to work at 11 a.m., this is how the check-out area looked; they were removing the counter tops:
counter%20tops%20being%20removed.jpg

To get to Adult Services or to Youth Services patrons were funneled around that area:
path%20from%20Youth%20Services.jpg

To check-out items, patrons have to go to the doors leading to the Large Meeting Room:
check%20out%20at%20Large%20Meeting%20Room%20door.jpg

Not too long after, the counter tops were all gone:
counter%20tops%20gone.jpg

And soon after that--mid-afternoon--the whole section was empty:
only%20the%20old%20rug%20is%20left.jpg

Only the rug where the counters were and the last bit of electrical connection remains:
last%20bit%20of%20electrical%20connections.jpg

The "new" entry to Youth Services is blocked again:
entry%20to%20Youth%20Services%20blocked.jpg

It reminds me of a play area at a mall--but without toys.

CONSTRUCTION AS OF WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 17

It doesn't look like much more has been done, but some changes are evident.
The new framing has been extended toward the East end of the Circulation Work Room:

The opposite (south) wall is being worked on as well:

Ongoing until November is the annual juried Art Show sponsored by the Elk Grove Art Association. It is located in the area between the Computer Lab and the Magazine Room.

After the workers left on Friday, they left the lights on and an opening into the construction area.
Going from left to right--
Glass has been removed from corner near former bookdrop slots:

Most of the lobby-side wall is now gone:

More glass has been removed in the corner where the motorized chair is usually parked:

YOUTHSERVICES:
On Monday, October 8, there will be a special program for Columbus Day. At 11 a.m. and at 1 p.m., Mad Science will be presented--showing how chemistry can result in spectacular and exciting results. All ages are welcome, but preschoolers must come with an adult. No tickets or registrations are required, but space is limited; Elk Grove residents will have priority.

This week sees the return of the popular Firefighter Story Times, usually part of the regular Storytime programs:
Tuesday, October 9, at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Wednesday, October 10, at 10 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 7 p.m.
Thursday, October 11, at 10 a.m.
A firefighter, often in uniform, will be part of the programs, BUT, if the scheduled firefighter has to go out on a call, Mrs. M or Mrs. Clarke will fill in. The selected stories, however, will feature firefighters.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE FRIDAY OCTOBER 5

Here's a picture of the bigger, neater hole between the Circulation workroom and the lobby:

Circ%20room%20hole%20bigger.jpg I was told it will be larger still.
The biggest problem so far is that the only public washrooms are the ones in the Youth Department.
