LIBRARY HAPPENINGS OCTOBER 1-7

Two Computer Classes are being offered this week:
Internet Basics will be presented on Monday, October 1, at 10 a.m.--learn about toolbars, URL's, and hyperlinks; for those unfamiliar with the Internet
Microsoft Word 2002 will be offered on Tuesday, October 2, at 2 p.m.--learn how to create a document, save it, and edit it
Register at the Circulation Desk. Participants must be able to use a computer mouse. Class size is limited.

On Tuesday, October 2, at 10:30 a.m., the Morning Book Group is scheduled to discuss Thornton Wilder's Pulitzer Prize winning book, The Bridge of San Luis Rey, about the collapse of a rope bridge in Peru in the 1700's that killed 5 people. For more information call Chris Mika at extension 271.

CONSTRUCTION CHANGES

The entryway floor is being ripped up and therefore the entrance into the library has been rereouted several times. On Wednesday night this is how it looked (it had already changed on Thursday):

On Thursday, the circ room was locked up and everyone was funneled around the back of the foyer and through a door next to the old ones that automatically opened.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS SEPTEMBER 24-30

ADULT SERVICES:

Plastic surgeon Dr. Phillip Bushnick will present the program Latest Trends in Cosmetic Surgery on Monday, September 24 at 7 p.m. Non-surgical as well as surgical methods will be covered. Register by calling Alexian Connects at 1-866-ALEXIAN (253-9426)

The computer class Microsoft Word 2002 will be offered on Friday, September 28 at 11 a.m. Creating, saving, and editing documents will be covered. Participants must be able to use a computer mouse. Register at the Reception Desk (or wherever the equivalent is during construction); class size is limited.

CONSTRUCTION STARTS

The preparations for the redesign of the entryway and circulation department have begun. Shelves are being moved and removed. The Circ room has been emptied and is temporarily located in the Large Meeting Room. Be prepared for a possible temporary change in the Library entrance and in locations for meetings over the next couple of months.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS SEPTEMBER 17-23

ADULT SERVICES:
On Tuesday, September 18, the Evening Book Group will be discussing Laurie R. King's The Beekeeper's Apprentice at 7 p.m.--retired Sherlock Holmes takes on young Mary Russell as his new apprentice in the art of detecting. For more information, call Chris Mika at extension 271.

On Saturday, September 22, the Computer Class Internet Basics will be presented at 2:30 p.m.--those unfamiliar with the Internet and the World Wide Web will learn about Toolbars, URL's, and Hyperlinks. Participants must be able to use a computer mouse. Register at the Reception Desk: class size is limited.

YOUTH SERVICES:
Storytimes and continuing Fall Programs begin this week and end November 21:
Book Babies (6 months to18 months, with adult) at 10 a.m. on Mondays [20 minutes]
Lapsit (18 months to 2 1/2 years, with adult) at 10:30 a.m. on Mondays [20 minutes]
Storytime (all ages, adults welcome) at 10 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 7 p.m. on Wednesdays [30 minutes]
Registration is not required for these classes.

Getting Ready to Read (3 1/2 & up, with adult) at 10 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays or at 10 a.m. on Thursdays [45 minutes]
SciKidz (1st grade through 3rd grade) at 4 p.m on Tuesdays [45 minutes]
Y-Sci (4th grade & up) at 4 p.m. on Thursdays [45 minutes]
These classes require Online Registration; class sizes are limited.

Also starting this week is a new program, Study Skills for Success, aimed at students in grades 4-7. It will meet on 3 Mondays, once a month. The first is this Monday, September 17 at 4 p.m. Register Online. [There is currently a Waiting List.]

This session's Babysitter's Training Course will be held this coming Saturday, September 22 at 10:30 a.m. and on Saturday, September 29 at 10:30 a.m. [4 hours]. Register Online. There is a fee of $10--to cover the cost of a book and supplies--and registrants are not fully registered until that fee is paid at the Youth Services Desk.

BOOK/VIDEO SALE THIS WEEKEND

The Friends are having a Lobby Sale this weekend featuring paperbacks, VHS tapes, and more. This will probably be the last one for a while since construction on the new Lobby/Circulation area will begin in a couple of weeks. Stop in today for some reading and viewing bargains!

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS SEPTEMBER 10-16

ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, September 10, the Computer Class Internet: Beyond the Basics will be offered at 9:15 a.m.--for those who are familiar with the Internet and who want to learn some tricks and shortcuts for easier navigation. Participants must be able to use a mouse. Register at the Reception Desk; class size is limited.

Congratulations to all the finishers of the Adult Summer Reading Program. Prize winners were announced at the "Homecoming Party" on Sunday. The list of winners is available in Adult Services.

YOUTH SERVICES:
This week, as a prelude to the official start of the Storytime sessions next week--and in anticipation of Talk LIke a Pirate Day-- Pirate & Princess Parties will be held for preschoolers through Kindergarten (and their parents):
Tuesday, September 11, at 10 a.m. and at 1:30 p.m.
Wednesday, September 12, at 7 p.m.
Thursday, September 13, at 10 a.m.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS SEPTEMBER 3-9

On Sunday, September 9, the Adult Summer Reading Program officially comes to an end with a special Homecoming Party for all the finishers, from 2-4 p.m. in the Large Meeting Room. There will be food, entertainment ("Sinatra"?), and prizes--the raffle drawings will be held then. Wear your prize shirt. For more information call Adult Services at extension 271.
