LIBRARY EVENTS JULY 30-AUGUST 5
ADULT SERVICES:
Several Computer Classes are being offered this week:
Heritage Quest & Ancestry Databases on Tuesday, July 31, at 7 p.m.--learn how to utilize our online genealogical databases so as to research family history
Windows Explorer on Wednesday, August 1, at 7 p.m.--learn how to handle files and folders on a personal PC
Beginning Excel on Thursday, August 2, at 7 p.m.--learn how to create spreadsheets, charts, and graphs
Microsoft Word 2002 on Friday, August 3, at 11 a.m.--learn how to create, save, and edit documents
Internet: Beyond the Basics on Friday, August 3, at 2:15 p.m.--learn tricks and shortcuts to be able to "surf the Net" more efficiently
Participants in all of these classes need to be able to use a computer mouse. Register at the Reception Desk; class size is limited.
YOUTH SERVICES:
The Youth Summer Reading Program has ended. The final weekly raffle was this morning at 11. Those who completed the program will be attending one of the performances of Frank Birdsall and his Comedy Cycle Show on Tuesday, July 31, at 7 p.m., or on Wednesday, August 1, at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., or 7 p.m. Anyone who is close to finishing can still report and claim prizes (including the Cycling Program) this week.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JULY 23-29
ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, July 23, at 7 p.m., Bill Helmuth (formerly with Time-Life Books) will present the program Faces & Places of China in the Large Meeting Room. China's history, culture, and people will be surveyed. Register at the Reception Desk. [Sponsored by the Friends of the Library]
Several Computer Classes will be offered this week:
Microsoft Word 2000 on Tuesday, July 24, at 2 p.m.--learn to create documents, edit them, and save them
Beginning Excel on Wednesday, July 25, at 2:30 p.m.--learn to create spreadsheets, charts, and graphs (familiarity with Windows XP is required)
Windows Explorer on Thursday, July 26, at 2:30 p.m.--learn to organize your PC by creating folders and files
Register for all of these classes at the Reception Desk; participants must be able to use a computer mouse.
YOUTH SERVICES:
On Thursday, July 26, the program, Decorate a Backpack will be presented at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m. For all ages, although kindergartners and younger must come with an adult. All supplies will be furnished. Register online. [All sessions are full although the 3 p.m. has positions on the Waiting List available.]
On Friday, July 27, at 10 a.m., the film Hannah Montana (G), consisting of several episodes from the hit Disney sit-com starring Miley Cyrus, will be shown in the Large Meeting Room. No tickets needed; children in Kindergarten and younger must come with an adult.
This is the last week for the Youth Summer Reading Program. Children can still sign up and spin the wheel for the raffle book through Friday, July 27. They can report and turn in raffle tickets through Monday, July 30 until 11 a.m. At that time the final raffles will be held. Storytimes end Wednesday, July 25. The next Storytime sessions will begin in mid-September.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JULY 16-22
ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, July 16, at 7 p.m., board-certified dermatologist Dr. Derick will present a program called Skin Care for All Ages. Specific skin conditions, preventive techniques, and treatments will be covered. To register, call Alexian Connects at 1-866-ALEXIAN (253-9426).
On Tuesday, July 17, at 7 p.m., the Evening Book Group will be discussing Ann Tyler's Digging to America--two families of different cultures meet while picking up newly adopted Korean children; how they each approach raising an adopted child and how the two families ultimately connect is treated with with humor and sympathy. For more information, call Chris Mika at extension 272.
On Friday night, July 20, at 10:30 p.m., Adult Services will be hosting a special Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Launch Party. Besides games and food, there will be an opportunity to win a copy of the book. At midnight, some patrons with current holds on the book will be able to check it out right away. For more information call the Reference Desk at extension 271 or 272. Register at the Reception Desk.
YOUTH SERVICES:
On Monday, July 16, at 2 p.m. in the Library Parking Lot (Southeast end), BMX Champ, Matt Wilhelm will be performing Bike Tricks. No tickets are necessary; just show up in the parking lot at 2. For all ages. [In case of bad weather, it will be rescheduled.]
On Thursday, July 19, Youth Services will be hosting 4 Harry Potter Parties and Raffles for third graders and up--at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m. There will be Potter-related treats and games (Quidditch anyone?), and a copy of the book (a coupon for redemption after the 21st) will be raffled at each program session. Register online. There are currently openings for all sessions.
On Friday morning at 10 a.m., the film The Last Mimzy (PG) will be shown--two children develop special talents after finding a box of unusual toys. No tickets are necessary, but children younger than 1st grade must come with an adult.
On Friday, July 20, Young Adults in grades 6 to 12 are invited to sign up for Dance Dance Revolution and Guitar Hero from 2-4:30 p.m. There will be Open Sessions and a final Competition. Snacks will be available. Register online. There are still openings.
The Babysitter's Training Course begins on Saturday, July 21, continuing on Saturday, July 28, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. To be certified, attendees (10 and up) must come to both sessions. There is a $10 fee for a book. A snack and a doll or stuffed toy large enough to be diapered must be brought to the classes. Children can register online, but it is provisional until the fee is paid. There are still openings available.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JULY 9-15
ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, July 9, the Friends of the Library will be holding their annual meeting at 6 p.m. A special program on Franklin Delano Roosevelt is scheduled to follow the general meeting. This meeting is restricted to members only, but new members are welcome to join at this meeting (or anytime, really).
Also on Monday, July 9, the film The Queen, starring Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II, will be shown at 7 p.m. Tickets can be obtained at the Reception Desk.

Online Resources on Monday, July 9, at 9:15 a.m.--learn about the electronic data-bases found on the Library website, as well as how to use the online catalog
Internet: Beyond the Basics on Wednesday, July 11, at 7:15 p.m.--learn how to use online information better through special tricks and shortcuts
Internet Basics on Saturday, July 14, at 2 p.m.--learn about the Internet and the World Wide Web, URL's, and toolbars
All classes require the ability to use a computer mouse. Register at the Reception desk; class sizes are limited.
YOUTH SERVICES:
Two sessions of Fun with Cartoons, led by V. Gene Myers, will be held this week, on
Monday, July 9, at 1:30 p.m. and on Wednesday, July 11, at 4 p.m. Participants will learn to create their own cartoon characters. Sign up online [the current sign-up status is "waiting list"]. For children in second grade and up.
On Thursday, July 12, Mrs. M will be showing kids how to Paint a Rock at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m. These classes are full.
On Friday, July 13, the film Bridge to Terabithia (PG) will be shown at 10 a.m.

LIBRARY CLOSED JULY 4
The Elk Grove Village Library will be closed on Wednesday, July 4. Regular hours will resume on Thursday, July 5, at 9 a.m. The library will also be open the usual hours, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., on Tuesday, July 3.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JULY2-8
ADULT SERVICES:
The Morning Book Group--Tuesday, July 3 at 10:30 a.m. in the Library--is scheduled to discuss Steve Hamilton's A Cold Day in Paradise. Hamilton won the Shamus award for the Best First Private Eye Novel for this book in 1999. It's about a former Detroit cop now residing in Michigan's UP who reluctantly gets involved in the murders of two bookies. Call Chris Mika for more information at extension 272 or 271.
The Adult Summer Reading Program continues. It's not too late to sign up.
YOUTHSERVICES:
All ages are invited to come on Thursday, July 5, for BINGO. Everyone will get a prize, but playing the game is where the fun is. Sessions are at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m. Anyone younger that 3rd graders must come with an adult. Register online; class sizes are limited.
The Creative Writing Workshop: Colorful Characters, for children in grades 6, 7, and 8, starts on Saturday, July 7. It will continue on consecutive Saturdays from 10-11:30 a.m. through August 25. Register online for one, all, or any number of sessions.
The Summer Reading Program continues. It's not too late to sign up.
