LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JUNE 11-17
ADULT SERVICES:
The Adult Summer Reading Program, Library High, began today. The first 100 registrants will receive a Goodie Bag. Also, just for this first week, registrants will receive a raffle ticket for a special "Day at Arlington Park". Readers must read 5 Elk Grove Library books that can be chosen from 10 different "Classes"--fiction or non-fiction--to earn a t-shirt. Any Elk Grove Library books read during the program--which will end September 5--will earn a raffle ticket that can be placed in the repository (megaphone) of one of the many prize sponsors, mostly gift certificates for restaurants. Enroll at the Deans Office (Adult Reference Desk) any time this summer.
Tonight, at 7 p.m., the musical film Dreamgirls (PG-13) will be shown in the Large Meeting Room. Starring Beyonce, Eddie Murphy, and Jennifer Hudson, the movie follows the discovery and rise to fame of a Motown girl group. Tickets can be obtained at the Reception Desk.
YOUTH SERVICES:
The Youth Summer Reading Program, The Great Reading Race, started today as well. Children--Read-to-Me's, Independent Readers, and Young Adults--who sign up today only will receive a special gift, a calculator. This year, to earn the t-shirt, participants only need to record the minutes they read, the number of minutes depending on their level. There will also be a Wheel of Dewey as an extra option; this will lead to a choice of book type--i.e., fairy tales--that will determine a separate category of weekly raffles. This program only runs through July 27, though the parties for the successful finishers will be July 31 and August 1.
Storytimes and weekly programs will begin next week.
