LIBRARY HAPPENINGS APRIL 30-MAY 6

ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, April 30, at 7 p.m, Dr. Yu Zhu, OMD, will present a program on Traditional Chinese Medicine. Learn how acupuncture and herbal remedies can potentially help in the diagnosis and treatment of many medical conditions from migraines to respiratory problems. Register at the Reception Desk.

Several Computer Classes will be offered this week:
Windows Explorer will be offered on Wednesday, May 2, at 7 p.m.--organize your PC through the creation of files and folders
Beginning Excel will be offered on Thursday, May 3, at 7 p.m.--learn to create charts, graphs, and spreadsheets
Internet Basics will be offered on Friday, May 4, at 10 a.m.--get started on accessing the World Wide Web through toolbars, URLs, and hyperlinks
Participants must be able to use a computer mouse. Register at the Reception Desk; class size is limited.

ADULT SERVICES:

YOUTH SERVICES:
No Library-sponsored events are scheduled for this week. However, the Finals of the Young Adult Battle of the Books will be held here on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in Kids Korner. Three schools had teams this year: Queen of the Rosary, Mead, and Grove.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS APRIL 16-22

ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, April 16, a Bus Trip is planned to the newly renovated Chicago Historical Society, now known as The Chicago History Museum. Afternoon tea at the Palm Court Lounge (in the famous Drake Hotel) will follow the museum tour. The group will leave at 9:45 a.m. and return at 3:45 p.m. If any spots are open, the cost is $56; tickets are available at the Reception Desk.

Microsoft Word 2000 is the only Computer Class being offered this week. It will be on Tuesday, April 17, at 2:30 p.m.--basic techniques for creating documents will be taught, including saving and editing. Participants must be able to use a mouse. Register at the Reception Desk; class size is limited.

On Thursday, April 19, as part of National Library Week, everyone is invited to a Game Night from 7-9 p.m. Favorite Board Games (Scrabble, Monopoly, Chess, Yahtzee, Backgammon, and more) will be available to play. Just drop in.

YOUTH SERVICES:
Youth Services is presenting two special programs for National Library Week. On Thursday, April 19, Dr, G will be hosting a Poetry Workshop (also as part of National Poetry Month) for students in grades 6 to 12. He'll help participants write their own poems and provide an opportunity for writers to share their own poems--or to just listen to the creations of others. Snacks and a raffle will also be part of the program. Sign up online.

On Saturday, April 21, at 11 a.m., long-time favorite, Chris Fascione, will combine storytelling, juggling, comedy, and mime in a lively program for all ages, Juggling Funny Stories. No tickets are required.

UNSCHEDULED FRIENDS' BOOK SALE THIS WEEKEND!

The Friends are holding an interim Book Sale this weekend. It is not on their schedule, but they have a lot of videos, children's books, best-sellers, paperbacks, and more--many of these items are Library discards (we've been weeding a lot). Come Saturday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.(?) and Sunday starting at 1 p.m.

YOUTH SERVICES T-SHIRT SALE ON NOW

The annual sale of t-shirts from past Summer Reading Programs is going on now. Sizes range from toddler 2 to adult XXL--but not all sizes are available in every shirt design. The cost is a reasonable $3 a shirt or 2 shirts for $5. Stop at the Youth Services desk for more information or to make a purchase.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS APRIL9-15

ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, April 9, at 9:15 a.m., Adult Services presents the Computer Class Online Resources--learn to use our own online catalog (finding titles, placing holds, etc.) as well as learning to use our Online databases. register at the Reception desk; participants must be able to use a mouse.

Also on Monday, April 9, the Friends of the Library will be hosting a "Friends Only" program at 7:00 p.m. (following their annual meeting at 6:30 p.m.) called FDR. Chicago actor R.J. Lindsey will be performing, portraying Roosevelt in a setting of a "Fireside Chat". This program is open only to members of the Friends. Tickets and memberships are available at the Reception desk.

On Tuesday, April 10, the movie Running with Scissors will be shown in the Large Meeting Room at 7:00 p.m. NOTE: this is a different day from the usual monthly movie day. This comedy about a young man from a disfunctional family who goes to live with the eccentric family of his divorced parents' psychiatrist is rated R.

ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, April 7, at 7:00 p.m., Travel: Iceland will be shown in the Large Meeting Room. Learn about the culture, people, unique animals, and geographic/geologic features of this fascinating Northern country. Register at the Reception Desk.

This week four Computer Classes are being offered:
Internet Basics will be on Monday, April 2, at 2:00 p.m.--for inexperienced computer users who want to learn about toolbars, URLs, and Internet addresses
Internet: Beyond the Basics will be offered on Wednesday, April 4, at 7:15 p.m.--learn shortcuts and tricks to more effectively navigate the World Wide Web
Beginning Excel will be offered on Thursday, April 5, at 2:00 p.m.--create spreadsheets, learning to format cells and make charts and graphs
Windows Explorer will be offered at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April, 6--learn to organize your PC using files and folders

The Morning Book Group will be meeting this month on Tuesday, April 3, at 10:30 a.m. to discuss Bernard Malamud's The Natural, a classic from the 50's about baseball. For more information, call Chris Mika at extension 271.

YOUTH SERVICES:

This week most of the preschool-kindergarten Storytimes will become the famous Bunny Hop & Hat Parade. Stories, puppet shows, songs, and games, as well as the eagerly anticipated Parade through the Library (with everyone wearing their hats and following the Spring Bunny), will be included in these seasonal storytimes:
Tuesday, April 3, at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Wednesday, April 4, at 7:00 p.m.
Thursday, April 5, at 10:00 a.m.
