LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JANUARY 29-FEBRUARY 4

ADULT SERVICES
On Monday, January 29, dermatologist Dr. Robert Polisky will present a program on non-surgical methods of appearance improvement. Entitled Not So Extreme Makeover, the program is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Large Meeting Room. Register by calling Alexian Connects at 1-866-ALEXIAN (253-9426)

YOUTH SERVICES
On Thursday, February 1, from 7-8:30 p.m., representatives from Elk Grove preschools and daycare centers will be available for questions and registration opportunities at the annual Preschool Fair. No registration is needed.

On Friday, February 2, at 2 p.m., the movie Open Season will be shown. This animated PG rated film features a bear and a mule deer banding together with other forest animals to protect themselves during hunting season. No tickets needed.

On Saturday, February 3, sign-up for the Youth Winter Reading Program, Read to Succeed, sponsored by the Chicago Wolves Hockey Team, will begin from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All who sign up that day will be entered in a raffle for three Wolves replica jerseys. Also present on Saturday, from noon-4 p.m., will be Captain Jack Sparrow (aka, Toby Markham)--bring your cameras!

The Reading Program lasts until March 23. Participants are asked to record every 30 minutes that they read. For those 30 minutes they will receive 2 raffle tickets, one that can be placed in a specific box for a specific Wolves related prize (winners chosen at the end of the program). The second ticket will be for a weekly raffle.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS

ATTENTION, CHOCOHOLICS! Tonight Pam Vieau of Chocolate Inspirations will present a program called Chocolate Tasting Primer. At 7 p.m. in the Large Meeting Romm, attendees will learn the history of chocolate, what the different types are, and they will have the opportunity to taste a variety of chocolates. Register at the Reception Desk.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JANUARY 15-21

ADULT SERVICES:
Monday, January 15, marks the start of the Adult Winter Reading Program: Fishing for Fiction. Read 3 qualifying books by March 11 to earn a raffle ticket for "fabulous prizes". Sign up at the Adult Services Reference Desk.

Two Computer Classes are scheduled for this week. On Tuesday, January 16, at 2:30 p.m., Microsoft Word 2002 will be offered, introducing the inexperienced to creating, editing, and saving documents. Windows Explorer will be offered on Thursday, January 18, at 2:30 p.m. for patrons interested in organizing data on their PCs through files and folders. Participants must be able to use a mouse. Register at the Reception Desk; class size is limited.

The Evening Book Group will be meeting Tuesday, January 16, at 7 p.m., to discuss Mary Doria Russell's A Thread of Grace, chronicling the Italian Resistance in WWII. For more information, call Chris Mika at extension 271.

YOUTH SERVICES:
As a special Martin Luther King Day treat, American Eagle Productions will be presenting the musical, Charlotte's Web at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, January 15. Ages 4 and up--preschoolers must have an adult with them--are invited to attend. No tickets are needed, but seating is limited in the Large Meeting Room.

This week all the various storytimes and weekly activities begin:
Book Babies (ages 6-18 months with adult)
Mondays--10:00-10:20 a.m.
Lapsit (ages 18 months-2 1/2 years with adult)
Mondays--10:30-10:50 a.m.
Toddler Tales (ages 2 1/2-3 1/2)
Tuesdays--10:00-10:20 a.m.
Storytime (ages 3 1/2-Kindergarten)
Tuesdays--10:30-11:00 a.m.
Wednesdays--10:00-10:30 a.m. or 1:30-2:00 p.m. or 7:00-7:30 p.m.
(Note: all ages are welcome to attend the Wednesday morning and evening sessions)
No registration is required for any of these classes. A ticket for the weekly raffle (a $10 Barnes & Noble Gift Certificate) will be given to children attending these classes.

The following classes, also starting this week, do require registration [see below]:
Getting Ready to Read (ages 3 1/2 & up with adult)
Tuesdays--1:30 p.m.
Thursdays--10:00 a.m.
Kaleidoscope (1st grade & up)
Tuesdays--4:00-4:45 p.m.
Science Magic (4th grade & up)
Thursdays--4:00-4:45 p.m.
Weekly raffle tickets will also be given out at these classes.

Registration for specific classes and programs is now being done Online through the Calendar on the Kids' Korner section of the EGVPL Website. You must be an Elk Grove Resident to use this service. Non-residents may call the Youth Services desk one day before a class or event is scheduled for information about openings.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JANUARY 8-14

On Monday, January 8, the film You, Me and Dupree, a comedy about the problems that arise when a newlywed groom's best friend moves in and gradually takes over the house, starring Owen Wilson, Kate Hudson, and Matt Dillon, will be shown at 7 p.m. in the Large Meeting Room. Register at the Reception Desk.

On Tuesday, January 9, at 10:30 a.m., the Morning Book Group will meet to discuss Patty Jane's House of Curl by Lorna Landvik, a humorous tale of two Minnesota sisters and their lives from the 50's to the 80's. For more information, call Chris Mica at extension 271.
