LIBRARY HAPPENINGS OCTOBER 30-NOVEMBER 5
ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, October 30, Bill Helmuth from Time-Life will present the program Around the World in 60 Minutes at 7:00 p.m. in the Large Meeting Room. Personal stories and experiences of this world traveller, from 25 different countries, with special emphasis on all kinds of religious sites, rituals, festivals, and shrines, will be covered in this presentation. Register at the Reception Desk.
Computer Clases:
The only one scheduled this week is Internet: Beyond the Basics on Friday, November 3, at 2:15 p.m.--learn tricks and shortcuts to improve efficiency in using the Internet. Participants must be able to use a mouse. Register at the Reception Desk; class size is limited.
YOUTH SERVICES:
Storytimes return to their regular schedule this week.
Battle of the Books teams need to come in and register by November 10. Individuals must bring in a parent to sign a permission slip and to specify any possible conflicts with battles. Team names have to be chosen and approved before the Big Meeting on Tuesday, November 14.

BOOK ENDS SILENT AUCTION
Many of the Book Ends that were decorated for the 50th Anniversary celebration are now available for purchase through a Silent Auction. Write your bid--minimum of $5--on a slip of paper and put it in the nearby box. An update will be posted so re-bids can be made.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS OCTOBER 23-29
ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, October 23, at 7 p.m., Kelly Holt from Alexian's Patient Care Services will present a program entitled A Good Night's Sleep. Ms. Holt will cover the latest diagnoses and treatments for sleeping disorders. Register by calling 1-866-ALEXIAN (253-9426).
Computer Classes:
Internet Basics will be offered twice this week
Monday, October 23 at 10 a.m. and Thursday, October 26, at 10 a.m.--learn how to use the Internet through URL addresses, toolbars, and hyperlinks
On Wednesday, October 25, a new class, Online Resources will be presented at 7:15 p.m.--this class will demonstrate how to use our Library's Homepage to access the catalog to find titles and place holds as well as how to use some of the Databases available on the website.
Participants are expected to be able to use a mouse. Register at the Reception Desk; class size is limited.
YOUTH SERVICES:
This week the regular Storytimes will be suspended because of the special Halloween Parties and Costume Parades. For pre-schoolers through Kindergarten, they are scheduled for
Tuesday, October 24, at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Wednesday, October 25, at 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Thursday, October 26, at 10 a.m.
There will be skits, puppet shows, stories, and a "surprise". No tickets or registration required. Children are encouraged to wear costumes--there will be a parade through the Library--and parents might want to bring cameras.

ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, October 16, the program Mission to Saturn will be presented at 7 p.m. Videos, images, and sounds will all be part of this spectacular look at the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft's four-year mission to Saturn. Register at the Reception Desk.
Computer Classes are starting up again:
Monday, October 16, at 9:15 a.m.--Internet: Beyond the Basics will present shortcuts amd tricks for more efficient use of the World Wide Web
Tuesday, October 17, at 10:30 a.m.--Microsoft Word 2000 will present basic techniques for writing, editing, and saving a document
Thursday, October 19, at 10:30 a.m.--Windows Explorer will show how to organize files on a PC using folders
All classes require the ability to use a mouse. Register at the Reception Desk; class size is limited.
YOUTH SERVICES:
This week, October 15-21, is Teen Read Week: Get Active @ Your Library. All week, teens--6th grade through high school--can earn raffle tickets by writing book recommendations. They can also earn sweet treats by solving the Celebrity Quiz. In addition, on Tuesday, October 17, DDR and Karoake will return to the Library for one night only from 7-8:30 p.m.(snacks provided). On Wednesday, October 18, or Friday, October 20, from 4 to 6 p.m., teens can learn to use Photoshop to creatively Edit Your Pictures!. Register for a 30 minute session of photo editing and/or the DDR session at the Youth Services Desk.

OCTOBER 15 VILLAGE OPEN HOUSE
On Sunday, October 15, from noon until 4 p.m., Elk Grove Township, the Village Hall, the Police Department, the Fire Department, the Elk Grove Library, and the Park District (Pavilion) will all be hosting a special 50th Anniversary Open House. There will be K-9 demonstrations, a "Live Room Burn" demonstration, tours of the Pavilion, exhibits of fire fighting, police, and public works vehicles, stories, balloons, raffles, giveaways, and food. Besides the appetizers at the author appearance (J.A. Konrath) at the Library, there will also be popcorn in the Reception area, and a vintage Good Humor Ice Cream truck.
NOTE: THE LIBRARY WILL BE OPEN AN HOUR EARLY, AT NOON, AND WILL STAY OPEN UNTIL 5 P.M.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS OCTOBER 9-15
ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, October 9, the film The Inside Man, starring Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster, Clive Owen, and Willem Dafoe, will be presented at 7 p.m. in the Large Meeting Room. A tense bank robbery/hostage situation escalates into a confusing standoff. Tickets may be obtained at the Reception Desk.
On Sunday, October 15, as part of the Village Open House, local mystery writer J.A. Konrath will be in the Adult Services Department for a "Kocktails with Konrath " book discussion at 1 p.m. Oer d'oerves and non-alcoholic cocktails (Bloody Marys, Whiskey Sours, and Rusty Nails) will be available. No registration is necessary.
There is currently an exhibit in the Check-out area display windows of Decorated Book Ends, projects done by members of the Elk Grove Artists Association and by Library staff members. Patrons can vote for their favorite design. [There is a possibility that some of them will be in a silent auction on October 15; details are not available as yet.]
YOUTH SERVICES:
On Monday, October 9, Willard the Wizard of Wisdom will be joined by Harriet, the Wizard's Apprentice, at 11 a.m. for a special program of library-related magic. For all ages, although pre-schoolers must be accompanied by an adult. No registration required, but seating is limited.
This week is also Fire Fighter Storytime Week. Firefighters (unless called out on duty) will lead the classes on Tuesday, October 10, at 10:30a.m. and at 1:30 p.m. [NOTE: the 10 a.m. Toddler Tales will be combined with the 10:30 class this week only.]; Wednesday, October 11, at 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 7 p.m.; and, Thursday, October 12, at 10 a.m.
Sunday, October 15, is the official start of this year's Teen Read Week: Get Active @ Your Library!--raffles, games, and special programs for teens all week.
On Sunday, October 15, Mrs. M will be telling stories related to Elk Grove is Tree-mendous. Showtime Tony, the balloon man, will also be performing.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS
Tonight, October 2, America Crime Fight will present a program at 7 p.m. in the Large Meeting Room called Staying Safe in a Dangerous World. Learn how to stay safe at home and away from home, in parking lots, and on the streets, how to avoid street crime, what to do when your car breaks down, and how to protect yourself from an attacker. Register at the Reception Desk.
On Tuesday, October 3, the Morning Book Group will meet at 10:30 a.m. at the Library to discuss Sebastian Junger's The Perfect Storm For more information call Adult reference, Ext. 271 or 272 and ask for Chris.
On Friday, October 6, a bus tour will be leaving at 9:30 a.m. (returning at 6:30 p.m.) for a trip to the historic Germantown, Wisconsin. Tour museums, "authentic" villages, gift shops, and enjoy lunch and musical entertainment at the Bavarian Inn in Glendale. Tickets are available at the Reception Desk for a reasonable cost.
