LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JUNE 26-JULY 2
ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, June 26, at 7:00 p.m., Academic Associates Reading Clinic will present the program Any Child Can Read. Learn how their unique approach can improve reading skills for students of all ages and receive a free copy of the booklet Put Reading First. Register at the Reception Desk.
YOUTH SERVICES:
On Tuesday, June 26, Holly Cleland, author of Glue and Go Costumes for Kids will present a workshop at 7:00 p.m. She will demonstrate how to make "prize-winning" costumes out of everyday materials. Three costumes will be given away. Children ages 4 and up and their parents--or anyone else interested--are eligible to attend. Register in Youth services.
On Thursday, weather permitting, there will be 4 sessions of Tie-Dye T-Shirts: 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m. All that's needed is a pre-washed (no fabric softener) cotton t-shirt--we'll provide the dye. Sessions are probably all full, but sometimes there are cancellations; check at the Youth Services Desk.
If it rains, Bingo will be held instead and the Tie-Dye will be held the following week on July 6.
On Wednesday, June 27 at 2:00 p.m., and Friday, June 30, at 2:00 p.m., there will be a special Dance Dance Revolution Program for interested Young Adults (entering 6th grade through high school). Wednesday will be a practice session so the dancers can get familiar with the equipment; Friday will be a Competition. Register in Youth Services.
Summer Reading Programs continue in both Youth and Adult Services. It's not too late to sign up.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JUNE 19-25
The Summer Reading Programs are going strong after the first week. In Youth Services several children have already earned their t-shirts. There is still time to sign up in both Adult and Youth Services.
ADULT:
On Monday, June 19, at 7:00 p.m., interested patrons can learn all they want to know about Scotland--food, architecture, kilts, Culloden, Highland games, and "rumbledethumps"--at the program entitled Travel: Scotland. Register at the Reception Desk.
Also on Monday at 7:00 p.m., a special presentation by "Kenmei Rokugatsu" (aka Shannon Townsend) is scheduled [as of this writing] entitled A Parents' Guide to Anime and Manga Art: What's with the Big Eyes?. Intended for any interested adults, Shannon and her husband will discuss the different types of Manga as well as some of the common conventions (big eyes, sailor uniforms, magic) that are found in this genre. Register for this program in Youth Services. THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN CANCELLED.
YOUTH SERVICES:
This week the Storytimes begin. They will run through July 26. No registration required.
Mondays at 10:00 a.m.--Bookbabies (6-18 months with parent)
Mondays at 10:30 a.m.--Lapsit (18 months to 2 1/2 years with parent)
Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m.--Toddler Tales (2 1/2 years to 3 1/2 years)
Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.--Storytime (3 1/2 to K)
Tuesdays at 2:30 p.m.--Storytime (3 1/2 to K)
Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m.--Kaleidoscope (Grade 1 & up)
Wednesdays at 7-7:45--Family Storytime and Craft (all ages)
On Thursday, June 22, at 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., there will be a special YA program, Scrapbooking. Make a special, personalized photo/scrapbook; we will provide all materials except the photos. Sign up at the Youth Services Desk. For children in Grade 6 through High School.
Registration is still going on for the Tie Dye T-shirts on Thursday, June 29, the Costume Workshop on Tuesday, June 27, Bingo on Thursday, July 6, and Dance, Dance Revolution for YA's on Wednesday, June 28 (practice) and Friday, June 30 (Competition)

SUMMER PROGRAM SIGN-UPS
Although the Storytimes and special programs offered by the Youth department do not start until after June 18, Sign-ups for several have already begun, mostly for programs with limited attendance:
YA Scrapbooking on Thursday, June 22 at 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
YA Dance Dance Revolution: Open (Practice) Session on Wednesday, June 28, at 2:00 p.m.
YA Dance Dance Revolution: Competition on Friday, June 30, at 2:00 p.m.
NOTE: YA programs are for children entering 6th grade through High School.
Costume Workshop on Tuesday, June 27, at 7:00 p.m. led by the Holly Cleeland, author of Glue and Go Costumes for Kids--for parents and children
Tie-&-Dye T-Shirts on Thursday, June 29 (Rain Date July 6) at 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:00 p.m.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JUNE 12-18
Of course, the main activity for this week is the opening of the Summer Reading Programs in both Adult and Youth Services. Sign-up starts Monday, June 12. The children's SRP ends July 28; the adult program runs until September 6. Both programs will have the same prize t-shirt celebrating the 5oth anniversary of the Village of Elk Grove--parents and kids will match this year.
Also this week, there will be three Computer Classes offered:
Microsoft Word 2000 on Wednesday, June 14, at 7:00 p.m.--learn to create a document, then edit and save it
Internet Basics on Thursday, June 15, at 2:00 p.m.--introduction to the Internet, toolbars, addresses, hyperlinks, and more for the 'Newby"
Windows Explorer on Thursday, June 15, at 7:00 p.m.--learn to utilize files and folders on your PC for better organization
All of these classes require the ability to use a computer mouse. Class sizes are limited. Register at the Reception Desk.

SUMMER READING STARTS JUNE 12
The Summer Reading and other programs will start this coming Monday, June 12. Earn t-shirts and raffle tickets in both Adult and Youth services by playing Elk-Grove-Opoly on the specialized game boards. Any child who signs up on June 12 will get a special treat. The first 100 Adults who sign up will get a special prize.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JUNE 5-11
Next week the Summer programs begin, so this week is relatively quiet.
There will be two Computer Classes this week:
Monday, June 5, at 9:15 a.m., Internet: Beyond the Basics will be presented for patrons with some on-line experience and will teach tricks and shortcuts for more efficient Internet use
Friday, June 9, at 10:00 a.m., Internet Basics will be presented for patrons with little or no on-line experience who can already use a mouse and will introduce toolbars, URLs, and hyperlinks.
Register for either of these classes at the Reception Desk; class size is limited.
The Morning Book Group is scheduled to discuss an oldie-but-a-goodie, Mrs. Mike by Benedict and Nancy Freedman--in 1907 a young Boston girl marries a Canadian Mountie and goes to live in the Northern Canadian wilderness. This group usually meets at the Sheila Ray Senior Center Library at 10:30 a.m. and is led by Reference Librarian Chris Mika. This month it will meet on Tuesday, June 6. For more information, call Chris at extension 271.
On Wednesday, June 9, Karen Kordisch from Alexian will demonstrate the power of Yoga to Energize through simple exercizes and warm-ups. Register by calling ALEXIAN CONNECTS at 1-866-ALEXIAN (253-9426.
