LIBRARY HAPPENINGS FEBRUARY 27-MARCH 5

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS FEBRUARY 20-26

The big event for this week is the long-awaited, highly anticipated FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY ANNUAL USED BOOK SALE. It will open Friday night, February 24, with a special Preview Night for Members Only from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Memberships can be purchased that night at the door. The General Public sales are Saturday, February 25, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Sunday, February 26, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. The sale on Sunday is a Bag Sale and buyers must purchase a bag for $5 to gain entrance; of course, the bag can then be filled at no extra cost ("Specials" excluded). Prices are usually $1 for hardbound books and $.50 for paperbacks, unless otherwise marked. This is one of the most organized booksales around and includes other media--magazines, videos, cds, toys, games, puzzles, etc.--as well. Some items have been on display near the checkout desk in the big glass cases since January.

On Presidents Day, Monday, February 20, Youth Services will be hosting a special program, Magic of the Spellbinder with Walter King Jr. Expect to see illusions, dance, music, and special effects in this show for all ages. There will be two performances, one at 11:00 a.m. and one at 1:00 p.m.; both will be in Kids Korner. No tickets are required, but seating is limited. Children younger than Preschoolers and Kindergarteners must be accompanied by an adult.

As part of the Read to Succeed Winter Reading Program, on Thursday, February 23, Youth Services will host a visit from Chicago Wolves player, Karl Stewart, Left Wing. It will be from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Kids Korner. Mr. Stewart will give a short talk, dress one of the attending children in a Wolves' uniform, and sign autographs. No tickets or registration needed.

On Saturday, February 25, and Sunday, February 26, a Babysitter's Training Clinic will be held in Kids Korner. This class is for ages 10 to 16 and is taught by a certified instructor. There is a $5 fee to cover the cost of a reference manual. Participants must plan to attend both days; register at the Youth Services Reference Desk. The class is limited to 25 students.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS FEBRUARY 6-12

ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, February 6, local film critic Reid Schultz, from Columbia College, will return for a timely program called A Night at the Oscars. The films of 2005, the 2006 Oscar nominations and the films that were overlooked, will be discussed by Mr. Schultz; audience participation will be encouraged. Register at the Reception Desk for this 7:00 p.m. presentation in the Large Meeting Room.

This week there will be several Computer Classes offered:
Internet Basics on Tuesday, February 7, at 10:00 a.m.--toolbars, IP addresses, hyperlinks, and more for patrons who can at least use a mouse
Exploring your PC on Wednesday, February 8, at 7:00 p.m.--working with folders to organize data
Internet: Beyond the Basics on Thursday, February 9, at 2:15 p.m.--patrons who can use a mouse will learn shortcuts and tricks for effective Internet use
Microsoft Word 2000 on Thursday, February 9, at 7:00 p.m.--If a patron can use a mouse, he/she can learn how to create word documents, edit them, and save them
Register for these classes at the Reception Desk.

The Morning Book Discussion Group will be meeting this week at the Sheila Ray Senior Center on Tuesday, February 7, at 10:30 a.m. Chris Mika will lead the discussion on P.J. Tracey's Monkeewrench.

YOUTH SERVICES:
There will be a Drop-in Craft on Saturday, February 12, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Interested children can come any time, but should register at the Youth Services Reference Desk to be assured of having supplies. For pre-schoolers and up.

The Wolves' Winter Reading Program began Saturday, February 4. There is still time to sign up and earn raffle tickets for every 30 minutes spent reading Elk Grove Library books.
