LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JANUARY 30-FEBRUARY 5
ADULT SERVICES
On Monday, January 30, Dr. Vulcas will present a program on The Stuffy Nose: Causes and Treatment. Medical and surgical options for sinusitis, deviated nasal septum, and allergies will be discussed. It will be at 7:00 p.m. in the Large Meeting Room. To register, call Alexian Connects at 1-866-ALEXIAN (1-866-253-9426).
Internet Basics, a class for those patrons who can use a mouse and who want to become more familiar with the World Wide Web, will be presented twice this week:
Monday, January 30, at 10:00 a.m.
Thursday, February 2, at 2:00 p.m.
Toolbars, Internet addresses, hyperlinks, and more, will be demonstrated.
YOUTH SERVICES
The annual Preschool Fair will be held on Thursday, February 2, from 7-8:30 p.m. Local Elk Grove nursery schools and daycare centers will have representatives on hand with information to help parents find the best place for their children.
Saturday, February 4, from 9:30-4, is the first day to register for the annual Wolves Winter Reading Program: Read to Succeed. Co-sponsored by the Chicago Wolves Hockey Team, participants will receive raffle tickets--good for Wolves-related prizes--for every 30 minutes that they read (verified by a parent signature). Each week there will be a drawing for prizes; at the end of the program, on March 24, there will be special drawings for even more prizes. On the first day, February 4, all who sign up will be eligible for a raffle drawing at 4:00 p.m. just for that day--winners must read for a minimum of 5 hours to claim their prizes. The Wolves' Player visit will be on Thursday, February 23, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. (More information on this later.)

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JANUARY 23-29
ADULT SERVICES
Chicago Crime Tour will be presented on Monday, January 23, in the Large Meeting Room at 7:00 p.m. Author/historian Richard Lindberg's slide show program will highlight many notorious Chicago sites, "scenes of crimes" from the 19th and 20th centuries, from Dillinger to Speck and more. Register at the Reception Desk.
Monday the 23rd is also the first day for the Adult Winter Reading Program: Time Travel Trilogy. Participants will be asked to read three books--one set in the past, one set in the present, and one set in the future--to be eligible for a prize drawing. The books must be read by March 12. Register starting on Monday at the Adult Services Reference Desk.
Two computer classes will be offered this week:
Microsoft Word 2000 on Tuesday, January 24, at 10:30 a.m.--an introductory class for learning the basics
Exploring Your PC on Thursday, January 26, at 10:30 a.m.--learn to organize your home computer through control of files and folders
Participants must be able to use a mouse. Register at the Reception Desk.
YOUTH SERVICES
All the Storytimes and after-school programs begin this week. [See the previous entry for times.] For more information, contact the Youth Services Reference Desk.
The annual Battle of the Books started this past week with some fierce battles pitting sisters against brothers and cousins against cousins. These contests involving 4-person teams of 4th & 5th graders from local elementary schools are usually held most afternoons at 4, 4:30, and, sometimes, 5:00 p.m. Each team is responsible for reading 40 different books (usually each member reads 10). Anyone can come and watch--except for members of other teams. The Battles will run through February and, possibly, March.

The Puppet Shows are over and the new session of storytimes will begin next week, starting on Monday, January 23, and lasting until April 6. The times will be:

LAPSIT (ages 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 years old with an adult)

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JANUARY 16-22
ADULT SERVICES:
On Monday, January 16, Wendy Jordan will present a program on Reiki: The Ancient Art of Energy Healing. This Universal Life Source Energy is used as a compliment to traditional and holistic medicine and is said to heal on physical, emotional, and spriritual levels. Register at the Reception Desk for this 7:00 p.m. meeting in the Large Meeting Room.
The Evening Book Group should be meeting on January 17 at 7:00 p.m. in the Library to discuss Anne tyler's Back When We Were Grownups
Youth Services:
On Monday, January 16, Martin Luther King Day, Face to Face Productions will present a muscial adaptation of Ben and Me at 10:00 a.m. in the Large Meeting Room. The program is suggested for children in Kindergarten and up. No registration is required, though seating is limited.
Spring Storytimes will be beginning the week of January 23rd. As an introduction, this week Mrs. M. and Mrs. C. will be putting on a special Puppet Show in Kids Korner at these times:
Tuesday, January 17 at 10:30 a.m. & 1:30 p.m.
Wednesday, January 18, at 1:30 p.m. & 7:00 p.m.
Thursday, January 19, at 10:00 a.m.
These are for all ages and no registration or tickets are required.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JANUARY 9-15
On Monday, January 9, the documentary March of the Penguins will be shown in the Large Meeting Room at 7:00 p.m. The film depicts the annual trip made by Emperor Penguins to Antarctica. Tickets are available at the Reception Desk.
ADULT SERVICES
On Monday, January 9, at 9:15 a.m., a class on the Internet: Beyond the Basics will be presented. Shortcuts and tricks will be shown to attendees familiar with the internet and with the use of a mouse. Register at the Reception Desk.
YOUTH SERVICES
On Friday, January 13, the first of three one-hour sessions on learning how to knit, YA Knit Wits, will start at 4:00 p.m.. This class for 6th graders and up is full already, with a waiting list, but is likely to be offered again.
Registration has already begun for Science Magic, a program for 3rd graders and up, scheduled for Thursdays from 4-4:45 p.m. and starting January 26.

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS JANUARY 2-JANUARY 8
The only Library scheduled events this week are both on Tuesday, January 3.
The Morning Book Group is supposed to be discussing Michael Chabon's Wonder Boys at the Sheila Ray Senior Center at 10:30 a.m.
At 7:00 p.m., the Library Board of Trustees will be meeting in the Large Meeting Room. This meeting is open to any interested persons.
